Strange Renewal; Stranger Crossover; Summer Blockbusters; Catching up on Comic Con; Fall Schedules and Premieres

I suppose it’s time to take a timeout from celebrating my 60th birthday, playing with my new 3-D printer, and shopping for a new wheelchair. That means it’s time for a new entertainment blog. And with a lot of blockbuster movies under our belt in a few more to go this summer and with the new TV season looming on the horizon… This is way overdue.

Among the recent movies we’ve seen the new Mad Max movie was wall-to-wall action that included some kick ass female heroes in addition to Max himself who seems to be pretty much along for the ride most of the time. Some of it literally riding along tied to the front bumper of one of the bad guys vehicles. It’s gone from theaters but if you didn’t see it, you might consider renting a Blu-ray will be sure to catch it when it comes to cable. The recent Marvel movies have all been worth seeing. The new Avengers movie was everything you would expect in a big Marvel action movie. And Ant-man was surprisingly good given the idea of an insect sized superhero seems a little bit silly. While it lacks the giant set piece action sequences of something like Avengers, there was still plenty of action and great 3-D effects. Finally the new Terminator movie was absolutely a must see in 3-D if possible for any fans of the series. Although sort of a reboot using the alternate timeline excuse, it does logically fit in with the original series of movies unlike some of the plot points from the TV series Sarah Connor Chronicles which seem to only loosely fit into the cinematic universe. Suggest that you watch the first 20 minutes or so of the original Terminator before seeing this movie. Not because it’s necessary but because it will make the opening of this new movie more fun. Also Jurassic World was excellent in IMAX 3-D. Have not yet seen the new Mission Impossible but I plan to next week.

I use to create my own fault TV schedules to help me keep track of new and returning shows, schedule changes etc. The problem was each network had their own calendar but there was no way to put it all together. Now there are other entertainment websites which do a great job so we will just put a link to them. Here is the fall TV schedule from TVLine.com which is excellent. The calendar itself is an image in the middle of this article. If you click on it once you get just the image which is handy to print. If you click it again in your browser it will zoom in to make it easier to read.

Fall TV Grid 2015: What’s on When? And Versus What?

That calendar shows what the schedule will look like once everything has premiered but if you want to see day by day when new and returning series will premiere in their staggered rollout, check out this article which is a September calendar showing day by day premieres and a sneak preview of October and November as well. Similarly you should click on the image in the center of the article for a printable version. And you could click again to zoom in using your browser.

Two other TV news items which deserve comment…

It’s not unusual for a network to have what they call crossover episodes in which characters from different cop shows team up to solve a case together. You know how it goes, NCIS has a big case so they team up with NCIS New Orleans. Or maybe even crossover to an unrelated show such as Hawaii 5-0. CW network has had extensive crossovers between Arrow and The Flash. In fact they scheduled one hoping that Arrow fans would boost the ratings of The Flash when in fact the opposite happened and establish show Arrow a boost from newcomer The Flash. But it appears that Fox network is going to do a crossover the likes of which we have never seen.

The detectives from Bones and Sleepy Hollow are both going to investigate the same case together this season.

I like my superhero and my supernatural fantasy TV shows a lot but they are part of a particular genre that I think should remain to themselves. While police procedural shows occasionally border on the realm of sci-fi when they use technology that doesn’t really exist, you expect your average police drama to remain firmly rooted in reality. I don’t look down on supernatural or superhero shows as being a lesser form of entertainment. But taking what is supposed to be a reality-based show and doing a crossover with what is clearly fantasy based just seems like it takes away some of the legitimacy of the cop show and tries to add a false sense of legitimacy to the fantasy show. I am a fan of both Bones and Sleepy Hollow and I have to say I don’t like the idea at all. My guess is that people who are fans of one or the other but not both of the shows will disapprove as well. Would you watch an episode of Law and Order if Batman suddenly showed up to help solve a crime? Maybe Ambassador Mr. Spock could get his friends from the Starship Enterprise to do one of those time travel episodes and could negotiate a peace treaty in the Middle East for Madam Secretary or Homeland.

The other somewhat surprising but certainly less disturbing news is that NBC has ordered season 2 of “Aquarius”. It is a totally fictional account about a cop (David Duchoveny) chasing after cult leader Charles Manson. First of all we had excellent miniseries and books telling the real-life story of the cops chasing Manson so I can see why we needed one that was completely fictional. Also NBC allegedly in competition with Netflix decided to release the entire 12 part season online on the date of the first episode premiered broadcast. I took that (as did many) is an indication that NBC had pretty much given up on the series, knew in advance that they probably were not going to broadcast all the episodes. Typically when a show is doing badly these days (especially a summer series) they show about four or five episodes, give up, and dump the remaining episodes for online streaming just shut up the fans. I tried watching a single episode and was bored to death. While they canceled Hannibal after 2 season which I really liked. I understand why Hannibal didn’t appeal to everyone because it was very gory, stylized, artsy, over directed. But it was still intriguing to me. Oh well… Onward to the regular news…

More Deaths than Game of Thrones; Forever Isn’t, Resurrection Doesn’t, The Returned Won’t and other cancellations; Lynch returns to Twin Peaks; Hawking gets Magical; Shane lives to punish; Thor answers phone

Before we go on with my usual entertainment blog we have the following trivia question…

What has more deaths than the average episode of Game of Thrones? Answer: this blog.

Seriously I generally report on celebrity deaths but for some reason it seems like there were an unusual number of them this time around. While everyone is screaming and crying over the passing of fictional characters in their favorite TV shows, how many fan tears were shed for these actual human beings? These were just the ones that I found and I left out some more obscure movie and TV producers, publicity people, behind-the-scenes people you never heard of. Here’s the list.

RIP composer James Horner whose film credits include Titanic, Braveheart, Avatar who died when the small plane was piloting crashed.

RIP actor Sir Christopher Lee known for Dracula and Saruman from Lord of the Rings. He was 93.

RIP comedian Anne Meara of comedy team Stiller & Meara and mother of Ben Stiller. She was 85.

RIP Suzanne Crough who played Tracy Partridge on The Partridge Family age 52 unreleased cause of death

RIP Sawyer Sweeten who played one of Ray Romano’s twin sons on Everybody Loves Raymond dead of apparent suicide at age 19.

RIP Grace Lee Whitney a.k.a. Yeoman Janice Rand from the original Star Trek dead at age 85.

RIP contestant on The Voice season 8 Anthony Riley died at age 28 of apparent suicide

RIP standup comedian/actor Rick Ducommun appeared in films The Burbs and Groundhog Day among others.

RIP Don Mankiewicz screenwriter who created Ironside and Marcus Welby. He was 93.

RIP Jane Meadows comedian actress who is married to the late Steve Allen. She was 95.

RIP mathematician John Nash who is the subject of the film “A Beautiful Mind” died in auto accident. He was 86.

RIP Betsy Palmer stage actress who is most famous for appearances on the 60s TV game show I’ve Got a Secret and as Jason’s mom in the original Friday the 13th movie. Trivia question answer as well. What was the name of the killer in Friday the 13th? It wasn’t Jason. It was his mom. Down

RIP actor Dick Van Patten who was the father in “Eight Is Enough”. He was 86.

The regular TV season wrapped weeks ago and summer series are in full swing. It’s time for another installment in my entertainment blog which is as usual long overdue. This blog actually took two days to compile I was so far behind. We’re going to talk about renewals and cancellations but if you want to skip all of my analysis you can just click on these links and see for yourself what’s renewed and what’s canceled. Or read my analysis and then click to see the shows I didn’t discuss.

Here is a link to TV Line’s Broadcast Renewal Scorecard

Here is a link to TV Line’s Cable Renewal Scorecard

It was a great season with outstanding new series such as The Flash, Gotham, and Daredevil all delivering strong stories for comic book fans and nonfans alike. Geek procedurals Scorpion and CSI: Cyber both got renewed and although not really inspired they are watchable. Surprisingly Sleepy Hollow got a third season. As did Agents of Shield and Agent Carter. I think the most pleasant surprise was the apocalyptic comedy “The Last Man on Earth”. I’ve decided it is the most realistic sci-fi series ever produced even though it is hilariously ridiculous. If there was a virus that wiped out all but a handful of people, I could totally believe everything that happened in those 13 episodes. I’m very pleased it will be back. Another improbable hit the musical sitcom Galivant was consistently funny will return next year. Other geek fair includes CW Network’s “The 100” which will be back along with iZombie which I enjoyed. The second season of Halt and Catch Fire is currently airing. FX Network vampire/virus show The Strain had its strong moments and will be back for a second season. SyFy Channel is bringing back 12 Monkeys and Z Nation for return seasons but will bid farewell to Haven and Continuum when they complete their current seasons. Falling Skies starts its final season this week.

I never did get into Parks and Recreation nor Mad Men so their passing didn’t really affect me. Speaking of it shows I never watched, I did check out season 1 of Breaking Bad streaming and now I understand why it was so popular. I intend to gradually catch up. Speaking of shows I never watched. The Simpsons has been renewed for season 27 and 28.

Madam Secretary had a strong first year and I’m pleased it has been renewed. The Mysteries of Laura had its funny moments but I’m surprised it’s getting a second season. Other female centric shows that didn’t make it include Bad Judge which I really liked and State of Affairs which was a total mess. I will say a fond farewell to Covert Affairs which I enjoyed but had probably run its course. Female centric newcomer How to Get Away with Murder which I originally did not like ended up changing my opinion and I’m looking forward to its second season.

The biggest cancellation that I’m bummed about is that Brian Williams will not be returning as anchor of NBC nightly news. Instead he will be covering “breaking news” on MSNBC. I guess that means he’s going to be sitting around the office all day waiting for something bad to happen. Such a shame.

None of the new romantic comedy sitcoms such as A to Z, Manhattan Love Story, and Selfie survived. Family comedy Blackish had its ups and downs but occasionally made me laugh and will be back. Other family sitcoms such as The Millers, Dads, About a Boy and The McCarthys got the axe.

Among canceled shows that I watched that will not return we say farewell to Revenge which was fun but had run its course. Helix which I watched on SyFy Channel but I probably won’t miss it. It was creepy and strange but it just never did really deliver. I will miss Forever about an immortal medical examiner in New York City. The Mentalist probably should’ve quit a year ago when they finally put the Red John storyline to rest. It was ready to go and it did.

Surprisingly the original CSI is wrapping up but will have a two hour movie to say farewell including the return of William Peterson and Marge Helgenberger. Also from the “beyond the sell by date” was the announcement that although American Idol will return next year, it will be its last season. The Following probably should’ve ended a year early as well but will not be back. Hell on Wheels will start the first half of its final season July 18. Broadchurch is getting a third season which I’m looking forward to. Luther will get a two part miniseries late this year. Of course we say very fond farewells to Justified and Sons of Anarchy. We will miss them.

Other cables shows of interest include Cinemax period medical drama The Knick was absolutely awesome and will be back for season 2. HBO’s bizarre departures series The Leftovers found an audience (me included) and will return. I will however greatly miss The Newsroom. History channel’s Vikings delivered a bloodied good season 3 and will be back for 4. Californication was fun for a while but had run its course. Episodes and Homeland and Penny Dreadful and Shameless will all be back on Showtime but we bid a fond farewell to Nurse Jackie. Starz pirate drama Black Sails was a real disappointment this year. Not as strong as its original season but it will be back for 3. Their new series Outlander a time traveling romantic drama put in an excellent first season and will be back.

We say a fond farewell to White Collar, Psych, and Necessary Roughness however USA will continue Royal Pains season 8 and we get more Suits later this month.

Many shows are finding new life on streaming networks. The Mindy Project is moving to Hulu. Longmire will have a new season on Netflix. River Street just wrapped up season three BBC America but Amazon Prime has ordered seasons four and five. Speaking of streaming… House of Cards gets a season 4. Daredevil and Grace and Frankie also are getting additional seasons as is Oranges the New Black and Marco Polo.

On PBS we get one more round of Downton Abbey and there will be a Sherlock special late this year followed by season 4.

TV Review: Wayward Pines

One of the latest “catchphrases” in the entertainment business is the so-called “Event Series”. This is an attempt to aggrandize a TV series that was so risky to produce that they decided to only make a few episodes as a sort of extended pilot. To justify the short order, they label it “an event” to make it sound like something special. Something that you absolutely have to see because it only comes along once in a lifetime.

Typically these event series have a sci-fi, fantasy, or horror theme. Some have even gone as far as to get this limited series order right off the page without even producing a pilot. The network apparently likes the high concept well enough that they want to throw together for 8 or 10 episodes and stick it on the schedule in the summer to see what happens. Recent examples have actually proved quite successful. The prime example is CBS series”Under the Dome” which will premiere its third season with a two-part episode on June 25. It was only supposed to run 13 episodes but it was so popular they rewrote the final episode to add a second and now a third season. The producers predict it will last five seasons. Also from CBS last season we had “Extant” which will begin its second season July 1.

Not to be outdone, Fox has entered the event series sweepstakes two weeks ago with the 10 episode event “Wayward Pines“. On the surface it looks like this was going to be an attempt to cash in on the renewed interest in “Twin Peaks” which became a cult classic for two seasons in 1990-91. The Showtime reboot of that series scheduled for 2016 seems to be a back on track now that they’ve settled there differences with director David Lynch. Both series deal with a federal agent investigating strange happenings in a small town in the Northwest. However Wayward Pines seems more like a cross between the 1967 cult classic “The Prisoner” and the 2010 Martin Scorsese film “Shutter Island” starring Leonard DiCaprio.

In Wayward Pines we have the story of US Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke played by Matt Dillon. The show opens with him awakening after a car crash and finding himself small town Wayward Pines Idaho. Through a series of flashbacks we learned that he is a Secret Service Agent blames himself for not catching a terrorist prior to a bombing which killed hundreds of people. We learn that going back to work he had various psychotic episodes and hallucinations. Thus we get the Shutter Island effect wherein we don’t know whether or not what we are seeing is for real or if they are showing us the character’s delusions or hallucinations. It doesn’t take him long to figure out that Wayward Pines is in fact a prison where he is being constantly watched and everyone is acting in fear of whoever is running the place. Thus we get the connections to The Prisoner.

He was supposed to be investigating the disappearance of 2 of his colleagues. He finds one of them dead in the town. The other one is living a different wife under a different name. He makes friends with a waitress named Beverly played by Juliette Lewis. She attempts to help him come to understand “what’s really going on” in this strange place. She is sort of his guide and is the only person who’s willing to talk openly with him about their situation.

One of the strange characteristics of this town (apart from the fact that there are no crickets and the cricket noises you hear are made by tiny speakers hidden in the bushes) is that time seems to have stopped. For example the one female Secret Service Agent who has only been missing for weeks claims to have been in the town for nearly 15 years. Time seems to have frozen in the 1980s. Everyone believes Bill Clinton is the president. The dates on money (of which is counterfeit) is no newer than 1989. This is either more of the prisoner-like psychological games they are playing with the residents or there is some sort of actual supernatural aspect to this place like “Lost“. The “Lost” similarities leave me to be concerned that the entire thing is actually a purgatory like place and none of it is real.

Everything that we see in Wayward Pines is through the experiences of Agent Burke which makes the reality/unreal questions a constant concern for the viewer. However we do get to see Burke’s wife, children, and colleagues back in the supposed real world wondering where he went and why he is missing. The only character that crosses over between real-world home and Wayward Pines a guy named Dr. Jenkins was very creepily portrayed by Toby Jones.

Matt Dillon is credible in what is otherwise a literally incredible situation. The rest of the cast does a decent job as well trying to portray normalcy in an obviously abnormal situation.

The best thing I can say about Wayward Pines is that it is only 10 episodes. We can hope that by the 10th we know what’s really going on but I would say you need to be prepared for the possibility that you will not know. And if this limited event series manages to draw sufficient audience, we might even have to put up with additional seasons such as we are with Under the Dome and Extant.

If you are a fan of The Prisoner, Twin Peaks, Shutter Island and don’t mind and ending that may be in that being a mixture of Lost and Fight Club then you might want to check this out. The second episode aired last night but both should be available on demand. There’s not much else to watch right now except perhaps check out the new game show “500 Questions” which is mildly interesting. Worst case scenario is you have to wait for 2016 for the new episodes of “Twin Peaks. For now I’m writing this one “I’m watching” but then I’m kind of weird.

More Jeopardy, Wheel, Daredevil, Monkeys, Moms, Broke Girls, Molly, Mulder, Last Man, Cards, Coach, Stone; Sex on My Birthday; Hiro Reborn; Mergers failing.

Bless me readers for I have sinned. It has been seven weeks since my last blog. I’ve been busy writing electronic project tutorials for Adafruit Industries and one of my cable boxes went out. Fortunately I replaced it with a new improved model that has 1 TB hard drive space (more than double the previous box) and allows me to record or watch up to 6 channels at once in HD. The extra hard drive space is nice however my theory is that you could fill up any size drive eventually. The real thing we are celebrating is the 6 channels at once. Our former box only allowed 2 and it was hard to schedule some recordings without getting conflicts. Speaking of Bright House cable. It seems that their merger with Charter Communications we may be dead after the failure of the merger between Comcast and Time Warner.. There was significant proposition that would’ve led to long court cases and in the end they’ve decided it wasn’t worth it. I guess we go back to the bright house motto “yesterday’s technology tomorrow”. Other cable systems have had advanced capacity DVR’s for years. We are just now getting them. Oh well. On to the news such as it is. Many of the “spoilers” may have already happened but if you are as far behind watching as I am, they can still be spoilers.

Nimoy did LLAP; AHS Goes Gaga; more Shameless, Librarians Arrow, Supernatural, 100, Flash, Gotham, Empire; Reunions: Will & Grace, Al & Trixie; HG:M Part 1 is most gross

Well over a month since my last entertainment update so like always some of my “spoilers” are ancient history and the word “news” definitely needs quote marks around it.

Will start off with the biggest loss namely the passing of Leonard Nimoy. I thought it was interesting that he always signed his tweets and other correspondence with LLAP which of course means live long and prosper. All I can really say about his passing is that he fulfilled that particular saying. He did live long and prospered and we all benefited from that inspiring character that he brought to life as well as the life of the man himself.

I also have to briefly mourn the loss of the NBC series Parenthood. It was one of the best written and acted dramas ever made for television. The quality held up to the very end. The storylines wrapped up in a very satisfying manner that honored the characters well. The montage sequence in the final episode gave us some amazing flashforwards into the future of the characters that made us wish we could’ve spent more time with them even more than we wish that before. I’m really going to miss it.

It’s time for renewals and cancellations of existing series. Although provided before, here is another link to the ongoing TVLine renewal scorecards

I haven’t had time to review most of the midseason new shows except for Empire which I previously reviewed. I continue to enjoy it four or five episodes into the season.

The Breaking Bad prequel series “Better Call Saul” is good quirky fun that I can highly recommend. It scored the highest premier rating of any cable TV series in history. I still haven’t seen any original Breaking Bad but I intend to catch up on the series one of these days. Perhaps after I get through seasons two and three of House of Cards.

SyFy Channel’s new series 12 Monkeys is much better than the Bruce Willis movie upon which it is loosely based. Really intriguing post-apocalyptic time travel conspiracy theory all in one series. Suggest you check it out.

I watched about 15 minutes of ABCs new Secrets and Lies and decided to skip it. It’s their version of Gracepoint/Broadchurch about the murder of a young boy. Having sat through 10 episodes each of those dramas I wasn’t in the mood for another retelling. ABC promises “Ours Is Better (than Gracepoint)” but I will just have to leave that claim untested. I’d rather watch season 2 of Broadchurch coming to BBC America in the spring.

Speaking of ripoff shows, NBC’s Allegiance which is a blatant ripoff of The Americans does appear to be sufficiently different and interesting that you should check it out especially if you like The Americans.

I’ve not had the opportunity to check out The Returned which is A&E’s ripoff of Resurrection. I’m getting a little tired of Resurrection and I’m not sure I will watch another season when/if it returns.

The jury is still out on Fox illustrious new detective series Backstrom. He’s a grumpy quirky super sleuth. Mix equal parts of Dr. House, Sherlock Holmes, and Colombo.

By the way it’s pilot season. There’s lots of news about networks ordering pilots and casting information on these shows but I gave up reporting on them because so many of these pilots never get picked up that it isn’t worth keeping track of them. So while there’s a lot of news about various actors getting various roles, I just want keep up with them until they actually get picked up to series. I will note however that a potential Criminal Minds spinoff series is getting an embedded pilot. That means an episode of Criminal Minds will introduce a whole new set of characters that may appear in a spinoff series the same way NCIS New Orleans did with the original NCIS.

Review: Empire

I’ve never been a fan of hip-hop or rap music. The closest I ever came was watching the movie “Hustle and Flow” starring Terrence Howard. That film’s greatest claim to fame is that it won an Oscar for the song “It’s Hard out There for a Pimp”. While I’m sure a lot of people voted for that song just because they wanted to see an Oscar go to a song with the word Pimp in the title, it actually deserve the award. So often films hire some popstar to sing some new song over the closing credits. The song really does nothing to enhance the film itself and did not appear in the body of the film. It’s just an excuse to get an Oscar nomination and possibly a win. In this case the song was integral to the story. It showed how this wannabe rap star actually created a rap song. He gave me a slightly more positive impression of rap music. I’m still not a fan of rap. I guess I’m just “old school” in that I happen to like melodies.

Terrence Howard is in the rap business once again in the new Fox series Empire. In some ways this might be a sequel to what is original pimp character might have done had he actually succeeded. It’s not a sequel. These are totally different characters. Howard plays Lucius Lyon, a rap star turned media mogul who is about to take his company Empire Media public on the stock exchange. In the midst of what should be the pinnacle of success he discovers he has approximately three years to live because of ALS a.k.a. Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Meanwhile his ex-wife Cookie played by Taraji P. Hansen. She has just been released from a 17 year prison sentence for dealing drugs. We find out that her drug money provided the initial $400,000 investment to lunch Empire Media. She uses that fact to blackmail her ex-husband and she’s trying to wrestle control of the company from him.

Meanwhile Lucius has told his three sons that they are all on trial to see who is going to take over the company from him “someday” even though he doesn’t tell them how soon that someday might be. The obvious choice is the son who went to business school and has had his life together is whole life. This is once actual rap star to take over the reins and one of his sons is obvious choice except for the fact that he is gay and Lucius has never accepted it. The third son is a musician and rapper but is pretty much a slacker.

Without giving away one minor plot twist we get to see that Lucius hasn’t completely left behind his gangster roots despite the fact that he is trying to portray himself as a legitimate businessman.

Overall the show is well written, well acted, and has the potential to be a big hit. The plot lines are reminiscent of a Shakespearean tragedy. There was a reference to King Lear in the pilot episode and future episodes have titles like “Unto the Breach” and “Sins of the Father” on which give it sort of an epic scale.

It appears we are also going to get three or four performances of rap and R&B songs in an episode all of which seem to be fairly well done although as I said I’m not a fan of the genre.

I was fully anticipating to give this show an honest review but did not think that it would grab my interest enough to make it on my regularly watched list. I watch way too much TV and I’ve still got season 2 of House of Cards unwatched 3 ready to drop next month. But for the time being I’m going to stick with this one and give it a “I’m watching” rating. It might not be for everyone. It might not be for me.

Longmire, Hell on Wheels, SYTYD, Girls, Missing, Dad, Rizzoli and Isles extended; Selfie, Perception, and others die

I got so far behind on writing entertainment news that some of these “spoilers” are no longer spoilers because the episode is already aired weeks ago. I’m going to go ahead and post spoiler links as if they were timely. It could be you still got old episodes cluttering up your DVR that would make these actual news. Got all tied up designing Christmas cards and playing with robot dinosaurs.

Meanwhile I did a recap of all of my reviews of new service this season. In case you missed it here is the link. It includes some information about canceled shows and shows which have had extended episode orders. Also contains a link to Ausiello’s series renewal scorecard that tells you the odds of shows being canceled. I will not be reporting cancellations with any of these shows since they’ve already been reported in this story.

We are very sad to report the passing of Carol Ann Sucri. You’ve probably never seen her but she is a important part of one of your favorite shows. She did the voice of the unseen Mrs. Wolowitz, Howard mother on Big Bang Theory. She passed of cancer at age 62. They have not yet revealed what will happen to the character but they don’t intend to replace the with a different actress and they resisted ever having her actually appear in the show.

Also RIP Mike Nichols director of The Graduate and numerous other great films as well as pioneering improv comedian with wife Elaine May.

Also RIP Glen A. Larson age 77 created the original Battle Star Galactica, Magnum PI, Knight Rider and other shows.

Also RIP Christine Cavanaugh who was the voice of Rugrats’ Chucky

Also RIP Edward Herman age 71 of brain cancer. He was a veteran character actor that I most remember for his amazing portrayal of a guest doctor on MASH who cannot deal with the rigors of meatball surgery and ended up needing help from psychiatrists Dr. Sidney.

Also RIP veteran ESPN Stuart Scott.

Also RIP Donna Douglas who played Ellie Mae on the Beverly hillbillies. Pres. Since the last installment we had season finales of Sons of Anarchy, The Newsroom, and White Collar all of which went out with one of their best seasons ever. We will try to get caught up for the second half of the season for remaining shows and prepare for midseason replacements shows.

Normally when we say “postmortem interview” we just mean an interview with a producer or actor at the end of a series or season. As you might guess with Sons Of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, “postmortem” is a literal term regarding characters 🙂

Review: Midseason re-review of all programs

We’ve already started seeing some midseason shows premier so I thought I would take a second look at all of the new fall shows that I’ve reviewed and see how they have held up to the first half of their freshman seasons. The link on each title below links to my original review. The shows are given in the order I reviewed them.

Madam Secretary: Originally I gave it an “I’m Watching” and said I could upgrade it to “I really like it”. It’s a definitive yes on that upgrade. The plots have remained mostly believable. The writing is smart. The acting is good. The running plot of the conspiracy theory hasn’t jumped the shark yet. Comes in a very close second to “Gotham” as best new series of the season. Has been picked up for full season and season 2 is a likely renewal.

GothamI’m highly likely to watch any comic book based TV series even if it’s only marginal. However this one greatly exceeded my expectations. So far no one wears comic book costumes which gives it a strong feeling of reality. The crime noir style system interesting. The characters are very multidimensional. The plot twists are phenomenal. Any insights we get into these epic characters at a different point in their life is just amazing beyond words. The most pleasant surprise is the relationship between Catwoman as a young girl and the young Bruce Wayne. My favorite new series of the season hands down. Has been picked up for a full season but no word yet on season 2.

Scorpion: All of the things that I liked and disliked about the show remain intact. The plots are still highly unbelievably contrived. The action scenes are still lots of fun. The interaction of the misfit characters gives that some redeeming value. I’ve kept watching it just because I like to show where the nerds are the heroes but it is in no way a quality show. Picked up for full season and highly likely to get a season 2.

Forever: This show was a very pleasant surprise in my original review. I didn’t think I would like it and I did initially. My opinion has not changed. It is one of my favorites new shows. They’ve taken the premise that this guy is immortal and comes back to life each time he is killed and made it believable and grounded in reality. They haven’t gone off on some supernatural or alien twists. The running plot of a bad guy who is similarly afflicted with immortality reached a peak at the midseason break and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Meanwhile it is a reasonably well written and very well acted police procedural whose individual stories are pretty good. Picked up for a full season but Michael Ausiello’s Scorecard list it as a longshot. (See links at the end of this post.)

How to Get Away with Murder: Although I was very skeptical about this show in my initial reviews, I stuck with it and in the end it’s paid off. The stories were strong enough that I could overlook the flaws with the show. The continuing Ministry of a murder being covered up by the law students did indeed hook me in. I still did not like in any way shape or form the flash-forwards that revealed the murder mystery. I especially dislike the fact that unlike “Damages” which used a similar storytelling device, these foreshadowing’s were not given in order which made it even more difficult to follow that part of the plot. I also had a lot of difficulty figuring out exactly who was the murder victim. Those scenes were all extremely dark and when they would show the victim’s face I was unfamiliar enough with the characters that I couldn’t figure out who it was. It’s no spoiler to tell you now that it was Annalise’s husband. In the end is up to Shonda Rhimes excellent standard. I can’t wait to see what happens in the second half of the season. It has been picked up for a full season and season 2 is a sure thing.

black-ish: I said I wasn’t like me watching many more of this show after the first one but I gave it a second and third chance. It turns out that Black-ish isn’t such a bad show after all especially when it stops trying to be so blackish. It may be because I’m an old white guy that I don’t relate to the more ethnic aspects of the show. I’m no racist I don’t mind that it’s about what it means to be black but I just don’t think those parts of the are especially funny. When it just tries to be an ordinary family comedy this show succeeds pretty well. The only really “blackish” themed episode that really made me laugh was one episode where Andre tries to teach is teenage son how to give “The Nod” and he passes another black man. I may do a separate blog post about “The Nod” of which I’ve experienced my own little version. The funniest part of that episode was when the father and grandfather taught the son how to scrunch up his face when he sees a woman walked by with a big black butt. Very funny stuff. So I continue with it even though it is somewhat inconsistent. With the exception of perhaps “Mulaney”, this is probably the best new comedy on. That’s not saying much because most of the rest of the new comedies really stink. Picked up for full season and likely to get 2.

Selfie: My low expectations for this show were confirmed. The Henry Higgins character tried to cure Eliza of her nerdy Internet addictive ways. The only episode that worked was about the second or third one in which she tried to get him hooked on the Internet and social media. That one was genuinely funny but it went downhill after that. ABC did not order additional episodes beyond the original order. It did show those that had been filmed but dump several of them during the holiday doldrums. Will not be back ever and it is no loss.

Manhattan Love Story: I called this one “Could be watchable” and had some hope that it would turn out okay. In the end it didn’t and the network canceled it after just 4 episodes.

Gracepoint: This is the Fox network remake of the British series Broadchurch: I absolutely loved the British version and could not understand why they would make an American version of it since the British one had already been shown here on BBC America channel. It’s a murder mystery that plays out over 10 episodes after seeing the first episode the plot points or 100% identical with the original British version. I mostly watched because I wanted to see how far they would go to keep the plot identical. Spoiler alert: I’m going to tell you who-done-it. In the original British version it was the female detective’s husband. He was never remotely a suspect until just minutes before they figured out it was him. The plot went down numerous blind alleys and eliminated other suspects before discovering the shocking twist. In the American version it went identical all the way through the confession of the husband. I was so pissed off that they didn’t change the show even one tiny bit. And then they changed it. It turns out that it was the 12-year-old son of the detective and that the father was confessing in order to save the boy. It turns out in both versions the father was a pedophile who was trying to have a relationship with the murdered boy. So the father was the bad guy either case. But the actual murderer was different. I love the original story a lot. The plot twist at the end that changed it wasn’t worth sitting through 10 hours of the same stuff. The American show Gracepoint will not be back next season as it had low ratings. The British show Broadchurch as just started showing second season in the UK and it will be on BBC America here starting in February. I highly recommend the British version.

Mulaney: I described the show as a ripoff of Seinfeld and the show itself recognize that when one character said to Mulaney “I defended you saying you’re not a ripoff of Seinfeld.” The second episode of this series was one of the funniest half hours I’ve seen on TV since Seinfeld. While they all were not that brilliant, overall I really liked this series. Unfortunately I got moved out of prime time into a 7:30 PM Sunday time slot has aired only intermittently. Ausiello lists it as “A long shot” for renewal. I’m disappointed. I’m going to miss it.

Bad Judge: I continued to watch this and it occasionally made me laugh. I admit much of it was just to see Kate Walsh run around in her underwear most of the time. The network did not order additional episodes beyond the first 12 but they did let all of those show. It will not be back next season. No big loss even though I kinda liked it.

A to Z: Initially only really liked this show but in the end the quality went downhill. The network did not order any episodes beyond the original 12 although it is showing all that were shot. It will not be back.

Jane the Virgin: I didn’t care for this show and only watched one episode. Actually I didn’t even finish all of it. It did get a full season pickup and is a likely return in season 2. It’s just not my cup of tea.

Cristela: The second episode of this series wasn’t as good as the first one and only ended up not watching it beyond that. It wasn’t a bad show. It just wasn’t good enough to keep me watching when a watching way too much TV to begin with. Was picked up for a full season and Ausiello says season 2 is a safe bet. I might try checking it out again at some point.

Marry Me: Although I thought the one big joke of the opening scene was pretty good, the rest of the show didn’t hold up and I gave up after 2 episodes. NBC on the other hand ordered an additional five shows beyond the original 13 however Ausiello says season 2 is too soon to tell.

Constantine: I have lukewarm feelings about this show and preferred the long-running CW network show Supernatural. I’ve only seen about three of these. The remaining episodes are filling up my DVR. NBC decided not to order additional episodes beyond the initial 13 however that doesn’t necessarily mean it has been canceled officially yet. They could still pick it up for season 2.

Utopia: I did not review this reality series that was sort of a cloud of CBS’ Big Brother. I kind of liked Utopia even though I fast-forwarded through the boring parts. Fox pulled the plug after just a few weeks. We didn’t even get to see the reaction of the contestants hearing that the show was killed. I think the outside world knew about the cancellation before the utopians did.

The McCarthys: I did not review this CBS sitcom except to say in a Facebook post that I would not be reviewing it because it was so bad it wasn’t with writing a bad review. Ausiello does not report any additional episodes pickups for the season and says that season 2 is too soon to tell.

The Flash: I’m not sure why I never got around to writing a review of this CW network comic book hero show. I really like it. Is a worthy companion to Arrow which follows it on CW. Both are set in the same universe of DC comics and they had a really good crossover episode on Flash 108 and Arrow 308. Highly recommended if you like costumed comic book hero shows.

State of Affairs: I only recently reviewed this show so read it. I quit watching after three episodes but the TV ads for it imply that it is becoming more action and less politics so I may give it another chance at some point. Ausiello listed as “too soon to tell” about renewal.

Review: Galvant

Last night ABC premiered a new offbeat comedy musical series called Galvant. As usual our only standard for comedies is “Did I laugh?” And indeed I laughed huge amounts.

Set in the 13th century the title character is the most famous and brave knight with a land. In the opening sequence we find that he’s in love with the maiden Madalena. She is kidnapped by the evil King Richard to be taken as his bride. In typical romantic hero stories, Galvant burst into the wedding chapel as the ceremony is taking place and makes a big speech about how the king can give her wealth and power but he can’t give her true love. You can chase me to the ends of the earth but she will always love me because only I love her. And in the comic twist Madalena says “I’ve given it some thought and I think I’ll take the money and the power instead of the love.”

In the next scene it’s a year later. Heartbroken Galvant is a drunken bum, Madalena still hasn’t consummated the relationship with the king. She prefers to get it on with the court jester whose jokes the king doesn’t get. “Knock, Knock… Orange you glad I didn’t say banana” escapes the king’s sense of humor and he is clueless the Queen is banging the jester.

Joshua Sasse as Galvant and Mallory Jansen as Maddalena are both British actors I’ve never seen before but are both brilliant in their roles. Timothy Ormundson is wonderfully cast as the hapless King Richard. You will recognize him from Psych where he played the similarly hapless detective Carlton Lassiter where he also got to show off his musical comedy skills in episode 715 “Psych the Musical”.

The feel of the thing is reminiscent of Monty Python and the Holy Grail set to music which of course is the Broadway musical Spamalot. I’ve not seen Spamalot so I can’t make a direct comparison. All I can say is that if you like extremely silly comedy set to music you will adore this series. It runs for eight episodes shown to per night for four weeks. You can catch a rerun of the first two this Saturday or get it on demand.

My favorite part is the brilliance of the lyrics. In the first episode the king is upset because Madalena is constantly comparing him to Galvant and finding him inadequate. So the king wants to kill Galvant and thinks of all the ways he could do it in a lighthearted song that includes lyrics such as…

♪ I want to shoot him with a crossbow ♪
♪ I want to stab him in the eye ♪
♪ I want to liberate his head from his neck ♪
♪ And then punt the bloody wreck sky high ♪
♪ I want to hurl him out a window ♪
♪ And shove explosives where the sun don’t shine ♪
♪ Want to skewer him with swords ♪
♪ Then slowly twist them ♪
♪ All around his reproductive system ♪
♪ Won’t that be divine? ♪
♪ Then she’ll be mine ♪

In the second episode the king and Madalena as well as Galvant and another princes he has been helping decide that perhaps they are such awful people afterwards. The song is titled “Maybe You’re Not the Worst Thing Ever” and in part goes…

♪ You’re frigid and demanding, I shudder at your call ♪
♪ Whenever you come near me, my flesh begins to crawl ♪
♪ But sometimes there are moments ♪
♪ I’m not repelled at all ♪
♪ Maybe you’re not the worst thing ever ♪

♪ You’re utterly disgusting, I loathe your manly stink ♪
♪ I see your mouth start moving, and, God, I need a drink ♪
♪ And then from out of nowhere, I’ll look at you and think ♪
♪ Maybe you’re not the worst thing ever ♪

♪ You’re worse than crabs ♪
♪ Worse than scurvy ♪
♪ Worse than lice or plague ♪
♪ But truth be told ♪
♪ you’re growing on me just like mold ♪

This show isn’t for everyone, but if you like offbeat over-the-top comedy set to music (and I do) it can’t be beat. It gets a definite “I’m watching” rating from me.
