Red Band Society Premiere Recap: Are These Kids All Right?

Review: Z Nation

I suppose the first thing we have to ask ourselves about Z Nation is “Do we really need another zombie show?” This one premiered on SyFy Channel last week and will air its second episode tonight. The gold standard for zombie shows of course AMC’s The Walking Dead. The Walking Dead has all of the deliciously gory zombie kills, the horror of being overrun by a swarm of zombies, and everything else you normally want any post-apocalyptic survivor story. Walking dead is also one of the best written, best acted dramatic hours on television. Walking Dead earns my highest Must-See Rating so “Z Nation” has stiff competition. If you also include comparisons to such shows as FX channel’s The Strain which although it is a vampire show still people running away from monsters who are trying to bite them. There is also competition from BBC America’s In the Flesh. So do we really need another zombie show?

Unfortunately like most of my reviews, the jury is still out in some ways.

In comparison to Walking Dead I would have to say the special effects, gore, and violence are about on par. They did top Walking Dead in the first episode by having the first zombie baby which was kind of cool. This show is definitely playing it more for laughs than for drama so comparisons to Walking Dead on storytelling and writing and acting are not going to be possible. In that respect it is a very different show. You don’t get that sense of dread or malaise that you get from Walking Dead. On the other hand it’s not as over-the-top as zombie films such as Simon Pegg’s Shaun of the Dead or Woody Harrelson’s Zombieland

The zombies themselves are faster than your typical zombies. Faster than Walking Dead. However they are not superhuman fast as in the Brad Pitt film World War Z.

The basic story takes place three years into the apocalypse. A group of survivors meets up with a soldier who is trying to get from New York to California  accompanied by “The only person known to survive a zombie bite”. He was given the only does of an experimental vaccine seconds before the lab where it was being developed was completely overrun by zombies. He bears the scars of multiple bites and has an overall bad attitude that he doesn’t want to be the savior of mankind. Spoiler his military escort gets killed off in the first episode and the other group of survivors decides to take up the cause of escorting the sky to a lab in California where hopefully he can save the world. You know like you do.

They are assisted via radio by some nerdy guy in an underground NORAD like military facility. He got left behind when everyone else bugged out of the base. He runs out to the runway to try to catch the plane just in time to see it take off and explode shortly afterwards.

The bottom line is if you are a zombie apocalypse fan once a good fun ride without all of the drama and angst of The Walking Dead then this is exactly the show for you. In my rating system and giving it a definite “I’m Watching It“. For now I’m recommending it to fans of the genre. That is in contrast to my Must-See recommendation for The Walking Dead in which I suggest anyone who can’t even remotely stomach it, check it out for some of the best drama you’ll ever see. The Walking Dead returns to AMC October 12 for season 5.

Review: The Mysteries of Laura

It was 2006 when Will and Grace left the air after eight seasons and we no longer got to see the best of what Deborah Messing had to offer us in the way of comedy. We did get to see her in a six hour miniseries followed by a 10 episode series titled The Starter Wife which had its moments but overall wasn’t that great. We also got to see a dramatic side of her for two seasons of Smash. When I heard she was getting a new show on NBC I was really looking forward to it because I’ve always been a big fan.

In her new series The Mysteries of Laura which premiered on NBC this week, she plays police detective Laura Diamond who is recently divorced (her husband is dragging his feet signing the final papers). She’s raising twin 4-year-old boys who are the most rowdy undisciplined children you’ll ever see on television. In an opening action sequence she shoots the ear off a guy who is who is holding it hostage at gunpoint and then walks away casually. Her car and her desk and her clothes are always messy. In trying to find a new preschool for her boys she did background checks on the teachers to see which one had the most parking tickets so she could blackmail them into getting her interview with the principal. It’s pretty much just one silly cliché gimmick after another. And SPOILER: her ex-husband who is also a cop gets transferred to her precinct and gets promoted to be her boss. Like we didn’t see that coming.

Underneath it all she does solve a crime but it was a little bit too much of a Perry Mason moment when at the last minute she declares “I solved the case” and then proceeds to reveal that the killer was someone who has never been a suspect the entire show.

In a way it’s reminiscent of comedy cop shows such as Monk (although her messiness is opposite of Monk’s OCD) or perhaps Psych although not quite as over-the-top.

The opening action sequence was kind of fun. Deborah Messing is easy on the eyes even though a scene in a swimming suit highlighted her flat-chested figure. I will probably like it better than I did Brooklyn Nine-Nine which I stopped watching after about two or three episodes.

For now giving it “Could Be Watchable” under my rating system. Keep in mind I’m a huge Deborah Messing fan or I would probably be passing on this one completely. Once I get to know her character better and decide whether or not the silliness is really funny or just plain stupid then I will decide whether or not to keep watching. For now I’ll watch as long as I have DVR space and time but don’t be surprised if it’s one of the first that I cut from my list of watching.

Review: Red Band Society

So a producer walks into a network executive’s office and says hey I’ve got a great idea for a TV show. It’s a mix of Grey’s Anatomy and The Breakfast Club. And without hearing another word, the executive says yes and it appeared on Fox network last night under the title “Red Band Society“. Okay I don’t know that for a fact but after watching the first episode it has to be something like that. (On further research this is actually a remake of a Spanish TV series of the same name.)

And they are none too subtle about the references to those two shows. Octavia Spencer plays a short, rotund, hard-nosed, African-American nurse who even gets referred to as “a Nazi” just like Chandra Wilson’s Dr. Bailey in Grey’s. The head doctor is named McAndrews which might as well be McDreamy. It’s their job to take care of the group of about six teenagers in various stages of death living in a Los Angeles hospital pediatric ward. Among the kids we have a former jock, a bad boy, a basket case, a stuck up cheerleader, etc. etc. There is a voiceover narration throughout the entire show just like Grey’s except there’s a surprise. We will get to that surprise in a minute.

Trying to repeat the success of two other successful franchises can be a challenge that is too big to meet especially throwing two of them together in the same show. The real test will be the writing and the acting. Once I realized what the show is about I got a giant chip on my shoulder because I knew each week that was going to be some teenager who had a chip on his shoulder because he was sick. And in some respects we’ve got that. However the chip seems to come and go frequently. Part of the time the kids have an attitude of “I wish people wouldn’t treat me special because I’m sick”. And the rest of the time they expect people to treat them special because they are sick. They gratuitously playing the “pity me” card but it’s not because they really want pity, they do it because they know they can manipulate people with it. In a strange way that actually works. One of the reasons I’m going to be somewhat judgmental and picky about this show is because it strikes a little bit close to home having grown up with a disability of my own and having friends who dealt with their own disabilities with varying degrees of success. Also having to have face the loss of friends due to their disabilities at an early age influence is my perspective.

The title of the show comes from the red paper wristbands that the kids get when they go off to surgery.

There is a risk that a show about kids many of which you have terminal illness can get overly melancholy, overly melodramatic and just plain sappy. I held back lots of reservations about the show until the last quarter of it in which it tiptoed up to all of those lines that managed not to cross them. It’s actually written with quite a bit of heart and it will tug on your heartstrings and maybe have you reaching for the tissue but I don’t think it goes too far.
However, there are problems. And they are big ones.

The voiceover narration is actually a kid who is in a coma. Even though he can’t move or speak, he claims to be able to hear everything and to tell you the story as it unfolds. His hearing must be supernatural however because he also comments on things that don’t occur within earshot. Another problem with coma boy is a scene where one of the other kids passes out and as she is unconscious she has a vision wherein she can communicate with the boy in the coma. And in another scene one of the patients reveals that he too was able to speak to the coma boy while he was under anesthesia during surgery.

If you could get past that strange plot point there are some other unrealistic things going on. The coma boy has a girl for a roommate. Despite the fact that he’s in a coma he would never see mix male and female patients in the same room at a hospital in the US or perhaps the world. In another scene, they are wheeling a kid off to surgery and he asked if they could wait a minute. The doctor agrees and the kid jumps up off of the gurney, runs down the hall to give something to one of the other patients and then comes back again. You think they’re really good to let you get away with that?

If you can overlook these plot devices and just roll with the story, this has a lot of potential. I mentioned it tiptoed up to the line of being overly melodramatic. Different viewers will draw that line in different places and who is to say that the writers will continue to be as skillful at not crossing it as they were in the first episode.

I’m giving it a “Could Be Watchable” on my rating scale. It could get upgraded the quality is sustained in future episodes.

WISH TV loses its Eye; No More Hodor (for now); Longmire no longer; Wil Won’t (be back)

As with the loss of Robin Williams, we will not attempt here to measure the significance of losing Joan Rivers. Both were singular talents that had no peers.

The biggest entertainment news is probably a story you have not heard. The local CBS affiliate WISH TV channel 8 is losing its affiliation with CBS. The change will take place January 1, 2015 Local TV stations used to be subsidized by their networks however over the years that has evolved to reverse itself so that local stations have to pay the networks for the network shows. WISH TV was in the middle of negotiating a new contract with CBS and didn’t want to pay as much as CBS was asking. CBS says that’s okay. We will take our programming somewhere else. Namely to WTTV channel 4. Channel 4 has always been an independent station which in recent years has shown programming from CW network such as Supernatural, Vampire Diaries, and Arrow as well as its young Superman series Smallville which ended a couple of years ago. WTTV is owned by Tribune Broadcasting which also owns WXIN Channel 59 which is a Fox affiliate. Tribune says that they will operate completely independently and they even plan to open the local newsroom for WTTV that will be separate from the WXIN newsgathering organization. From the articles I’ve read, WISH TV was taken quite by surprise. All requests for comment have returned with the response “We don’t know”. For example local news people sign multi-your contracts presuming that the TV station is still going to have a news program. But without income from the network programs it’s questionable whether channel 8 can continue to produce a local new show. In the 1970s channel 6 and Channel 13 swapped affiliations between ABC and NBC. I thought perhaps channel 8 would pick up CW network but the articles linked below from the Indianapolis Star WTTV will continue to air CW network programs on its subcarrier channel 4.2 while caring CBS on 4.1 over the air. Bright House cable currently does not show any sub channels from channel 4 but they do air sub channels from other local stations such as MyTV and Cozi so my guess is they will eventually add the additional channel 4.2 as well other cable and satellite providers. That’s just speculation on my part. Here are the links to the articles from the Indianapolis Star a few weeks ago with more details. Article from Indianapolis Star website and another article from Indianapolis Star website.

A couple of new shows for you to check out on Starz network. Outlander is the story of a World War II Army nurse who goes on a late honeymoon with her husband after the war and while touring some Scottish ruins gets magically transported back to the 1700s. Based on a series of novels by Diana Gabaldon. Except for the initial time jump it’s not very sci-fi/fantasy but is more of a historical drama. But it’s really well done and produced by former producers of Battle Star Galactica. It’s holding my interest after three or four episodes. The other new Starz series is called “The Chair”. It’s a reality series produced by former Project Greenlight producer Chris Moore. It pits two different first-time movie directors against each other to create a feature film (at least 83 minutes) based on the same screenplay. In the first episode that aired last Friday each director has done major rewrites of the screenplay but the basic setting and characters have to remain the same. If you are a fan of moviemaking and especially if you are a fan of Project Greenlight which had previously aired on HBO, then you definitely want to check this out.

It’s time for the new fall TV shows to start. Sons of Anarchy premiered last night on FX. Haven is returning to SyFy Channel this week. Boardwalk Empire premiered its final season on HBO Sunday. Just to name a few. I used to make my own Fall TV schedule that showed which shows were new, and which ones were changing time slots. But I finally found the website that makes a pretty good table of its own. You can download a PDF printable version of the broadcast and cable schedules here. Not much on the cable schedule.

Specifically we want to mention the passing of two of our favorite shows. HBO’s True Blood aired its final episode a couple of weeks ago. It made use of this final season to do some flashbacks to show some interesting back story that was very satisfying. And it wrapped up tying up all of the loose ends of other storylines. Altogether it was a really great show and a satisfying but somewhat bittersweet ending. Bittersweet is the same word that I would use for this series finale of The Killing. The show was about a male/female pair of Seattle detectives who spent the first season half on AMC network trying to solve one case. Viewers were a bit upset that they didn’t solve it by the season finale of the first season but it was still a quality show throughout. It was thought to be canceled after the second season but got a reprieve of a third season on AMC that ended with Detective Sarah Linden killing a fellow detective (who happened to be a serial killer). That was supposed to be really really the final season. And then it got picked up by Netflix for an additional six episode many season which gave us a very juicy case as well as showing us the aftermath of what happened at the end of season 3 the ending of this fourth and allegedly final season also had a satisfying ending although they did kind of wrap it up quickly. I think I believe them when they say it will not be back but with this show you never know. Anyway I liked them both and will miss them greatly.

Since our last installment we had the Emmy Awards. Here is a link to the winners. I’m getting a little bit disgruntled that the same shows and actors win year after year and that some really outstanding performances get overlooked. While the Oscars are too much of a snobbish movie buff kind of thing, The Emmys are in my opinion becoming just a popularity contest. Emmy Winners 2014 — Full List

A couple of new shows to talk about. HBO has a strange drama series from one of the creators of “Lost” titled “The Leftovers”. The premise is that 2% of the Earth’s population vanishes into thin air at the same time. It’s not the biblical Rapture because some of the people who disappeared were obviously not very nice people. The show picks up three years later as people are trying to deal with the personal and metaphysical consequences of such a strange event. Strange cults have popped up all over the place. One guy named Holy Wayne seems to be able to cheer people up there mourning with a hug. Another cult called the GR (Guilty Remnant) go around starting people, wearing white clothes, and chain-smoking cigarettes while taking a vow of silence. And then to top it all off, something strange is going on with the dogs. Underneath all this bizarre goings-on is some of the best dramatic writing and acting you will find anywhere. So if you can get by the really bizarre and ridiculous plot (or lack thereof) and just see it as a series of character studies, it’s worth checking out. Not for everyone mind you but I’m enjoying it as much as you can enjoy such a depressing story.

The other bizarre new show you might want to check out his FX’s “The Strain”. It’s a sort of vampire like story where you get bitten, die, come back to life bizarre alien creature growing inside of you that shoots a giant snake out of your mouth that bites other people who die etc. etc. The hero of the story is a doctor from the CDC is trying to track down the cause of this “infection”. Of course we got a creepy old guy from Romania or somewhere who knows all about these creatures in sort of a Van Helsing kind of way. And there’s a big secret Corporation is trying to exploit these creatures for its own wicked reasons. And their client some old guy who is dying of liver failure and wants to live forever. Not your typical modern-day vampire you fall in love with kind of story but more of an old-school stop the vampires before they take over the world.

Check both of the above out at your own peril you might like them. Or you might wish you had an hour of your life back laid wasted 🙂

EPIX movies found; Clones Black and Blue; Fritz and Felix; The Force is with Chicago

My list of entertainment news articles to read is approaching 2000 so it’s time to wade through them and put out another blog.

Probably the biggest entertainment news is that Bright House Cable has added “Epix” pay channels to its lineup as a three-month free preview. It runs through the end of August after which it will cost an additional $5 per month. This is a new pay cable network owned by Viacom, Lionsgate, and MGM. It was created in 2010 after those networks failed to reach an agreement with Showtime Networks to carry their movies. So if you’ve been wondering why movies such as the new series of Star Trek, The Hunger Games, Marvel’s the Avengers etc. have not been showing up on HBO, Showtime, Starz etc. is because they are on this new network. In addition to first-run films and older films from those studios, they also have concerts, comedy specials, and original documentaries. Among the documentaries is a six part series called “The Captains” in which William Shatner as a sitdown one-on-one interview with all of the actors who have portrayed Star Trek captains on TV. This includes Avery Brooks was on Star Trek DS 9 who normally never gives interviews. It was a pretty good series. I’ve seen them all now. With the free trial runs out I’m definitely signing up for this new channel. The only thing it is missing is 3-D on some of those titles which should have been 3-D. But other than that I’m really loving it because it carries lots of action movies like those just named. I know it is not available on U-Verse but I think dish or DirecTV may carry it. I’m not sure about Comcast.

If you’ve not seen the new AMC series Halt and Catch Fire I highly recommend it. It takes place in the early 1980s when a fictional computer company named Cardiff Electronics (is that a vague Dr. Who reference?) Attempts to build one of the first IBM PC clones. It’s a pretty good drama show even if you’re not a computer geek like me. If you are a computer geek then it is a must-see.

If you’ve missed some Walking Dead, AMC will air all four seasons of the series in a marathon starting 9 AM July 4. Also new documentaries about the series will air Tuesday, July 8 at 10 PM and Tuesday, July 15 at 10 PM with lots of behind-the-scenes footage.

Because I’m so far behind, some of the “spoilers” may have already happened. Sorry about that.

TV Renewals and Cancellations: My Review

It’s been almost 2 months since my last entertainment blog. I’ve been so busy with programming projects, a brief hospital visit, and catching up on watching TV shows (I’m a month behind on some shows) that I haven’t had time to put together this blog. to get things started here are your official guides to what got canceled and what got renewed. Below these links are my comments on some but not all of the shows that were canceled or renewed. Then in a separate blog entry I will go back to my usual entertainment news.

2014 broadcast TV renewal scorecard
2014 cable TV renewal scorecard

Here are my thoughts on various canceled or renewed series. When I say “I didn’t know it existed” sometimes that’s literally true and sometimes we just means I never watched it and/or never had any interest in watching it. When I say “surprised” I mean that I like the show but didn’t think it would survive and I’m happy it did. Also I’m not mentioning renewed shows that I expected to be renewed. Here we go…
ABC: canceled shows I didn’t know existed: The Assets, Back in the Game, Lucky 7, Mixoloy, The Neighbors, Suburbatory, Super Fun Night.
ABC: Canceled shows I might miss: Killer Women, Mind Games (only saw a couple of episodes that kind of liked it),, Once upon a Time in Wonderland (it was a fun diversion and I sort of hate to see it go but I understand they couldn’t keep it up forever), Trophy Wife (it had potential but just never developed).
ABC: Shows I’m very glad will be back: Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD (was very pleasantly surprised it’s coming back), Once upon a Time (very happy), Resurrection (very pleasantly surprised), Revenge (big guilty pleasure).
CBS: Canceled but no surprise Bad Teacher, The Crazy Ones, Friends with Better Lives, We Are Men. Canceled but I’m disappointed: Intelligence, Hostages (although I understand why), How I Met Your Mother (I will miss it but it has run its course. Was very satisfied with the way they wrapped it up)
CBS: Renewed: Big Bang Theory (for 8, 9 & 10 Hooray!), The Millers (surprised but not pleasantly. Liked it at first but then it got way too silly), Mom (guilty pleasure),
Fox: canceled and I’m not surprised: Dads, Enlisted, Raising Hope, Rake (had potential), X factor (too much bickering among judges. Not enough focus on the contestants), Us & Them (never heard of it)
Fox: canceled and very disappointed: Almost Human
Fox: renewed and I’m happy: The Following, Sleepy Hollow.
NBC canceled: Believe (disappointed but not surprised), Community (never watched), Crisis (liked it but not surprised), Dracula (disappointed but not surprised), Ironside (very bad show. Disappointed it wasn’t any good), Michael J Fox Show (wanted it to be good but it never was), Revolution (disappointed but not surprised), Sean Saves the World (never had a chance. Very bad) Welcome to the Family (never heard of it), Growing up Fisher (not surprised)
NBC renewed and I’m happy: The Blacklist, Grimm, Hannibal (very good show!)
CW network: canceled Nikita (it ran its course but it was fun while it lasted), Star-Crossed (watched one. Didn’t go back. Not surprised), The Tomorrow People (mildly disappointed it’s canceled).
CW network: renewed: The 100 (very pleasantly surprised), Arrow (happy), Supernatural (happy), Beauty and the Beast (surprised. Didn’t care for it even though I wanted to)
A&E Network: renewed Bates Motel (never watched. Looks bad) Longmire (premieres June 2)
AMC canceled Breaking Bad (very much regret never watching), The Killing (moved to Netflix. Can’t wait to see it), Low Winter Sun (no good, not surprised)
AMC renewed: The Walking Dead (counting down days to next season)
BBC America: canceled Being Human (never liked new cast), Luther (they could bring it back anytime. Wish they would), Copper (disappointed but as long as Ripper Street has been renewed I’m okay)
BBC America: renewed: Dr. Who (of course very happy), Orphan Black (very happy)
Cinemax renewed Banshee (never got into it), Strike Back (next season will be last. Really like it)
FX/FXX canceled: Chozen (terrible show), Legit (barely watchable)
FX/FXX Renewed and I’m happy: American Horror Story, The Americans, Archer, Justified (season 6 will be last season), Sons of Anarchy (sadly next season will be last), Wilfred (cannot believe this show was even made let alone renewed for 4 seasons. Absolutely terribly bad show)
HBO renews Boardwalk Empire (gave up on it midseason. Next season will be last), Girls (don’t let anybody know I watch this), Game of Thrones (very happy renewed for season 5 & 6), The Newsroom (sadly season 3 will be last), Silicon Valley (have not yet watched but intend to. Season 2 already renewed), True Blood (season 7 will be last. Love the show but it’s time for it to go). Veep (still catching up on season 2 while season 3 underway. Renewed for season 4)
HBO canceled and I never heard of or never watched: Eastbound & Down, Enlightened, Family Tree, Hello Ladies, Treme
Showtime canceled: The Borgias (liked season 1, missed seeing season 2.), Californication (final season underway. I need to catch up. Will miss it.) Dexter (miss you very much), House of Lies (never watched)
Showtime renewed and I’m happy: Episodes, Homeland, Masters of Sex, Shameless, Web Therapy, Nurse Jackie (a bit surprised), Ray Donovan (mixed feelings about this show. We’ll see if season two holds up)
Starz renewed: Black Sails (happy), Da Vinci Demons (need to catch up but I like it)
Starz Canceled Magic City (never lived up to potential), the White Queen (possible prequel series coming which would be fun)
Syfy Channel canceled: Being Human (will miss it but it had run its course), Warehouse 13 (farewell old friend)
Syfy Channel renewed: Haven (coming back for 26 episodes hooray!), Helix (interesting to see where this one goes)
Syfy Channel undecided: Bitten (no word on season 2. I watch it when I get a chance but it’s not a must-see), Continuum (season 3 currently showing, no word on the future but I hope it comes back), Defiance (returns June 19), Lost Girl (season 5 not yet picked up by Syfy Channel. I watch it sometimes but is not must-see)
TNT canceled: King and Maxwell (too bad), Mob City (didn’t care for it), Southland (no big deal)
TNT renewed for this summer but no word beyond that: Falling Skies (June 22), Major Crimes (June 9), Perception (June 17), Rizzoli and Isles (June 17)
TV land renewed Hot in Cleveland (guilty pleasure)
USA canceled: Burn Notice (we will miss you), Necessary Roughness paren sorry to see it go but it had run its course), Psych (very sorry to see it go)
USA renewed and I’m happy:: Affairs, Royal Pains, Suits, White-Collar (renewed for shortened season)

I will try to get a regular entertainment blog out soon (maybe even later today)
