TV Shows Renewals and Cancellations Commentary

TV Shows Renewals and Cancellations Commentary

Normally in my entertainment news blogs I include information on which TV shows are being canceled or renewed. It had been so long since I had done such a blog I decided to separate out that topic into a separate blog. My source of information is the following link from TV Line.

I won’t comment on every show so you might want to check the link to see if they have information on a show I didn’t mention.. Going network by network here are the broadcast TV shows that have either been renewed, canceled, or scheduled to end.

ABC

  • All of their primetime game shows such as Pyramid, Card Sharks, Match Game, Celebrity Family Fusion, Holy Moly, Press Your Luck, Who Wants to be a Millionaire and To Tell the Truth have been renewed. The only one I ever watched was Millionaire.
  • Reality shows such as American Housewife, The Bachelor, Bachelor in Paradise none of which I watch have been renewed
  • American Idol renewed however I thought last year’s “at home” version was absolutely terrible. If we don’t get out from underneath the pandemic I would wish they simply postpone it. Singer “Just Sam” won the season all alone in her apartment without any family or friends to celebrate with her. The hometown visit for the finalists never happened. The duets with famous celebrities was completely unsatisfying when done virtually. I thought the whole thing was a disaster. America’s Got Talent is probably down that same rabbit hole and I’m not looking forward to it.
  • Dancing With The Stars renewed however Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews will not be back as hosts. The same panel of judges are expected to return. I suppose this show would be watchable without an audience but it would probably miss something like the audience booing at the judges especially the Len Goodman.
  • The following shows were canceled and I either didn’t watch them or perhaps never even heard of them: The Baker and the Beauty, Bless This Mess, Grand Hotel, Kids Say the Darndest Things, Reef Break, Schooled, Single Parents.
  • How to Get Away with Murder — series ended May 14. I watched all but the final season of this. It was just too tiring to watch with all of the flash forwards and flashbacks. It was a show deliberately designed to keep the audience guessing and it seemed that when all of the questions were answered in the final episode each season I no longer cared about the outcome. It just wasn’t worth the effort to try to reassemble the timelines in your head each episode. I liked the early seasons but it just wasn’t worth it anymore. Goodbye.
  • Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD final episodes now airing. This season has been by far their best ever. It’s nice that they are going out on a high note but I wish some of the previous seasons had been this great. I’m going to miss it.
  • Returning sitcoms: black-ish, The Conners, The Goldbergs. I only watch the first two and I like them. Spinoff mixed-ish will also return. I watched a few and liked it. Will probably binge the rest someday. The only really good new sitcom last year.
  • Modern Family — A groundbreaking sitcom that lasted 11 seasons and finished on a nice note back in April. I didn’t see much of the last just because my schedule was full but it was a fun ride while it lasted.
  • Fresh off the Boat — series finale was February 21. I never watched it.
  • Grey’s Anatomy will be back for its 17th season without original cast member Justin Chambers as Dr. Alex Karev who was written out late this past. Also related its spinoff Station 19. I continue to enjoy both of them.
  • The Rookie and Stumptown are new last season cop shows that I rather enjoyed but did not watch that much. They will both be back.

CBS

  • Reality shows Big Brother, Big Brother: Celebrity Edition and Love Island are back this summer. Also Undercover Boss returns and I couldn’t care less.
  • Survivor and The Amazing Race have been renewed but delayed because of the pandemic. I can’t see either one going back into production until the pandemic is completely under control. I miss them both already.
  • Sitcoms Bob Hearts Abishola, The Unicorn, The Neighborhood, Mom, Young Sheldon Renewed. I only watch the last two. I never did Heart Bob 🙂 Seemed like a sad ripoff of Mike and Molly. I gave Unicorn good review but didn’t have time to watch it. Wasn’t interested in Neighborhood.
  • Broke, Carol’s Second Act, Tommy, Man with a Plan, God Friended Me all canceled as I expected. Many friends said they liked Tommy. I didn’t watch any of them.
  • Hawaii Five-O ended its 10 year run on April 3. I really enjoyed it but finally got tired and gave up on it partway through last season.
  • Blood & Treasure, MacGyver, Magnum P.I. renewed but I don’t watch.
  • Bull, FBI, NCIS, NCIS Los Angeles, NCIS New Orleans, SWAT, Seal Team all coming back. I watched all expect LA. Don’t know why I don’t like it. Characters just don’t appeal to me the way the others do.
  • Criminal Minds aired its final episode February 19. Ran for 15 seasons. I probably watched eight or nine of them but I finally got tired of a new and weirder psychopath each week.
  • Evil renewed. Did not watch it but intended to. I might go back and binge at some point. Legal drama All Rise renewed but I never watched and probably won’t. Looks like it potential.

Fox

  • 911, 911: Lone Star, The Masked Singer, Prodigal Son all returning and I’m very happy. Lone Star isn’t as good as the original 911 but it’s watchable.
  • The Orville — creator/star Seth McFarlane was too busy to produce the next season in time. So Fox decided to pass on it and season 3 will relocate to Hulu. I really look forward to it.
  • Empire had its final episode April 21 and is it possibility of a wrapup movie. I watched the first season but didn’t care enough to continue.
  • BH 90210, Deputy, Flirty Dancing, Outmatched not watched by me and apparently nobody else. All canceled.
  • So You Think You Can Dance — season 17 called off for pandemic. No word about its future.
  • The Simpsons, Beat Shazam, Bless the Harts, Bob’s Burgers, Duncanville, The Great North, Hell’s Kitchen, Master Chef, Last Man Standing, The Moodys, The Resident all renewed and I either did didn’t watch or never heard of them.

NBC

  • America’s Got Talent and America’s Got Talent The Champions are listed as “sure thing” however I’m already dreading how AGT live shows will look during pandemic. American Ninja Warrior, Ellen’s Game of Games and The Voice also returning but I don’t watch.
  • Little Big Shots listed as “a safe bet” while The Wall, Songland listed as “a long shot” and “could go either way” respectively. Making It renewed.
  • Bluff City Law an excellent legal drama starring Jimmy Smits did not survive its first season. I really liked it.
  • AP Bio which I never liked is moving to Peacock streaming for its third season. Counsel of Dads, Indebted, Lincoln Rhyme, Perfect Harmony, The InBetween, Sunnyside are all canceled. Superstore returns without its star America Ferrera and I don’t care for any of these. I wanted to like Lincoln but it was just really bad
  • Blindspot series finale just aired. I’m 2 seasons behind but I still like it and intend to binge it to completion.
  • All three Chicago shows, Law & Order: SVU Manifest and New Amsterdam all renewed for 3 more seasons. I only watch Manifest but I’m behind a season.
  • Good Girls, The Blacklist, This Is Us, Brooklyn Nine-Nine all returning but I only watch the first three.
  • Will and Grace had its second series finale April 23. It was fun to have it back for a couple of new seasons but it was probably ready to quit.

CW

  • Batwoman returns with a new character. Black Lightning, Legends of Tomorrow, Stargirl, The Flash, Supergirl all renewed and I watch regularly. Arrow had its series finale January 28 and I will miss it a little bit.
  • Supernatural it’s 15th and final season will premier this fall. I’m about season and a half behind but it still favorite of mine. Probably time for it to go however.
  • The 100: returned May 20 with its final season. There are rumors of a spinoff. I kind of like it as well as the other YA sci-fi series Pandora which is returning much to my surprise. It’s not great but it’s okay.
  • All-American, Charmed, Dynasty, Legacies, Nancy Drew, Riverdale, Roswell New Mexico, Whose Line Is It Anyway all renewed but I don’t watch.
  • Penn & Teller: Fool Us returning and I’m very happy.
  • Katy Keene I think this is a spinoff from some other CW show that I never watch. It will not be back.

Cable Channels

Here is the link to the page that is the basis for these listings.

Obviously neither I nor my source TV Line can cover every cable TV show. This is just a sampling.

AMC

  • Better Call Saul — I’m behind but I plan to catch up for its 6th and final season.
  • Dispatches from Elsewhere season 1 began April 27 and it looked like it was not intended to be multi-season. Bizarre yet interesting show with a very unsatisfying final episode. No word on its future. The Terror also is a one season at a time kind of show that if it returns will be a totally new premise as was the second season. No word yet.
  • McMafia and NOS4A2 renewed but I don’t watch.
  • Lodge 49 was a fun quirky show that will not be back for season 3 and I probably really won’t miss it. But it had its moments.

After More Than a Year Hiatus… An Entertainment News Blog.

It’s been over a year since I did an entertainment news blog. Much of this is out of date and will probably be lots of obituaries but I’m going to go through the RSS feeds of all my entertainment new sites and try to get caught up before the new TV season starts. Assuming it does start. I hope to find out in writing this what the status is on whether or not production can resume in the face of the pandemic.

I was going to include my usual links to the list of renewed and canceled TV shows but I’m going to do that in a separate blog with my reaction to some of them.

Usually at this point I mentioned movies that I’ve seen recently. But the last movie I went to once “The Joker” which was wonderful. I look forward to getting back to movies sometime soon once the virus runs its course. In the links below here are some articles of interest.

Follow-up On Previous Reviews and Looking Ahead

Those of you who know me, know how addicted I am to TV. I have a list of entertainment websites that I frequent to get caught up on all the latest entertainment news. For a long time every time I would see an interesting article I would email a link to my friends but pretty soon I was sending lots of emails. I changed my policy and started putting together longer emails with lots of links and lots of other entertainment news items that were a sentence or two long and not really worth a link. I was sending it perhaps once a month to about eight or nine people. Finally I decided in February 2012 to open this entertainment blog and then post the link to Facebook where more people could read it. I also periodically post my reviews of new TV shows and last year I made a serious attempt to review every new show but I wasn’t able to keep up.

I just looked at my last entertainment news update blog was in March 2019 over a year ago. I have posted quite a few reviews since that time and even added a new section of YouTube channel reviews. You can expect more YouTube reviews sometime soon.

I’m going to try to get caught up on some entertainment news and post a blog. It’s probably going to take days to go through my RSS feeds of all my websites. My RSS reader only saves about 8000 articles and I’m sure it has overflowed several times in more than a year. So much of the “news” will be old news. It will probably consists of lots of obituaries. But I would like to get caught up while everything is on hiatus because of the pandemic. When TV production finally does start anew then I will be caught up and ready to go.

As I was scrolling back to previous articles I thought perhaps I would take a quick moment to give you an update on all of the shows that I previously reviewed. The big entertainment news article will probably take me a week or more to prepare. Here’s a follow-up on all of the reviews I’ve written in the past year and a half.

“Gone” Will Be Gone Soon but Plot Twists Save It from Being Just Another Police Consultant Show

I really liked this short series. It’s a shame they didn’t make more of them. In my review I said it was a one and done and it was.

“Witches” Should Be Left Undiscovered

Apparently this BBC America series “A Discovery of Witches” was more well received by the audience then it was me. According to IMDb it was renewed for seasons 2 and 3 although neither one has premiered yet or has a premiere date. I still say it’s a hard pass.

New “Twilight Zone” Might Make CBS All Access Worth It

The Jordan Peele reboot of “The Twilight Zone” had a rather uneven first season. Some of the episodes I thought were brilliant while others were just so-so. It was fun to try to spot all of the Easter eggs in each episode. There were YouTube videos that helps you spot them. Season 2 has already premiered but I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet. It’s high on my to-do list.

Bob Hearts is a Weak Reboot of Mike without Molly

Apparently the audience ❤s “Bob ❤s Abishola” better than I did. It was a reasonably big hit for CBS and has been renewed for season 2.

“All Rise” has Potential to Give Shondaland Competition

CBS legal drama “All Rise” was okay and I rated it “recommended watchable” but I never did watch anything beyond the first couple of episodes. I decided I liked the Jimmy Smits legal drama “Bluff City Law”. Sadly Bluff didn’t get renewed but “All Rise” will be back next season. I doubt I will pick it up.

“Mixed-ish” is Funny and More Poignant than Its Parent “Black-ish”

“mixed-ish” did really well and was extended for a full season of 23 episodes and has been renewed for next season. Sadly I did not have time to watch more than a couple of the first episodes but I intend to go back and binge sometime. I still recommend it as the only new sitcom worth watching in the past year.

“Emergence” Might Emerge On Top of a Overdone Premise

I really liked this take on an old concept that I described as “overdone”. I managed to watch almost half of the episodes and I do plan to finish it someday. Unfortunately it is a one and done with only 13 episodes made. I don’t know how much of a cliffhanger they might have left or if they resolved the story but it did not get renewed.

“Carol’s Second Act” Can’t Compete with her Previous Work

As predicted “Carol” isn’t going to get a third act. It made it to 18 episodes but did not get renewed.

“Prodigal Son” is a Hannibal Ripoff but it Works

I highly recommended “Prodigal Son” after just one episode and it did not disappoint in the remaining 19 episodes. Although IMDb doesn’t show it is renewed, TV Line says it has been and I’m really looking forward to more. A good one to binge on demand.

“Stumptown” is Mildly Entertaining but Nothing Special

Although I only watched a couple of episodes, I kind of liked it but never did get around to finishing it. Maybe I will binge it before season 2 starts.

“Almost Family” is Almost Worthless

Apparently I was right. 13 episodes with no renewal. This was really a stinker.

“Sunnyside” Celebrates Incompetent Politicians

I called this correctly also. 13 and done with no renewal.

“Batwoman” is a Worthy Edition to the Arrowverse

I didn’t get to watch much of this but what I saw I liked and I will definitely finish it off eventually. Much to everyone’s surprise, at the end of the successful first season, the title star actress Ruby Rose decided to quit. Next season there will be a new actress playing a new character who will take up the mantle of Batwoman. While some people say on-set injuries played a part in her decision, she insists she just didn’t want to play the role anymore. No controversy but lots of speculation.

“The Unicorn” Verifies Walton Goggins Can Do Anything

I gave this a “Recommended Watchable” which means I thought it was pretty good but would not watching it myself. That was true. I never went beyond the opening couple of episodes but the audience liked all 18 enough that it will be back next year.

“Deputy” is Nothing Special

The audience agreed. 13 and done with no renewal.

“For All Mankind” is almost worth subscribing to Apple TV+

I loved every episode of this and cannot wait for its return. HIGHLY recommended even if you aren’t a sci-fi fan. It’s a really richly drawn alternate history of the space program.

Fans of Dystopian Action Should See “See”

I really like this new series although it did fizzle a little bit towards the end I am looking forward to a new season. Not worth subscribing to Apple TV+ but if you have it, and are in need of some post-apocalyptic fun action then my recommendation persists “See See”.

“The Mandalorian” Is the Best Star Wars Since “The Empire Strikes Back”

I stand by my original assessment and the audience agrees. It was a huge hit and the fans went nuts over the “Baby Yoda” character. EVERYONE is highly anticipating its return. One confession however… I’ve never seen a bad Star Wars movie or series. I liked all nine of the movies in the Skywalker series even the final three. I also liked Solo which didn’t do well at the box office. But I think I’m in the majority on liking this one. By the way there are rumors that Lucas/Disney is considering disowning the final three Star Wars movies saying they are not officially part of canon and would be relegated to the noncanonical “Legends” series. More if I hear anything. Disney+ remains the best value in streaming.

Would You Recognize Jesus If He Arrived Today? “Messiah” on Netflix Seeks the Answer.

This was definitely intended as a one season miniseries. If you’ve not seen it, definitely check it out. I’m surprised there wasn’t more hype or even controversy about it. Apparently the religious right never discovered it.

“The Morning Show” Best New Drama of the Year — Says Me

I stand by my glowing review of this highly nominated series. It will be back and I can’t wait to see what they do next.

“Star Trek: Picard” Shows Great Promise

The first episode was wonderful. The next five or so were real yawners. But it finished very strong. If you gave up on this one after a couple of episodes, give it another try. It will be back for a second season.

“Devs” is a Creepy Reflection on the Nature of Reality.

This one kept me on the edge of my seat for the full 8 episodes. However it finished kind of flat. I wasn’t satisfied with the ending but it was a fun ride while it lasted. A very thought-provoking series about the nature of reality and free will. This was definitely a one-shot miniseries and will not be back.

After that review back in March any blogs since then have been about my favorite YouTube channels. I had hoped to post more of those perhaps on a weekly basis but I got tied up with different maker projects (which pay me and this doesn’t) so I got away from that. Look for a big wrapup entertainment news here and about a week and more YouTube reviews soon after that.

Entertainment News: Renewals, Cancellations, Obituaries, and Other News

My last entertainment news was dated in September 2017. So obviously some of what I found on my entertainment websites was so outdated it could hardly be classified as “news”. Some of the spoilers are likely things that are ready happened. But if you’re like me and you’re weeks behind maybe some of it is news.

Since my last general entertainment news blog I posted over a dozen reviews of individual TV shows. Most of them were Fall premieres but a few of them were midseason premieres. There are about five new midseason premieres that I’ve not yet had an opportunity to review and I don’t know if I will get caught up on them or not.

You can browse through these reviews by looking at older posts in this blog. I really want to call your attention to a YouTube channel called “DUST” which has over 100 science-fiction and horror short subject films. They are collected from filmmakers over the world. There is also a Facebook fan group called “DUST Portal” which discusses not only the films they present but sci-fi in general. Here is a link to my blog post about that YouTube channel and Facebook group. There are multiple associated links in the blog post. If you like science-fiction it is HIGHLY recommended you check it out.

“DUST” — An Amazing Source of Short Sci-Fi Films

Since my last report I’ve seen three movies. Mild spoilers ahead…

“First Man” is the biopic about astronaut Neil Armstrong starring Ryan Gosling. I saw it at the White River IMAX which is Indiana’s largest movie screen. Not only were the visuals and special-effects spectacular (they won the Oscar for special-effects this year) the sound was totally immersive. You really felt like you were riding the rockets with the astronauts. It was an interesting portrait of a very reserved and humble man. While your Blu-ray or cable viewings won’t do it justice like 70 mm IMAX, it’s still highly recommended if you haven’t seen it.

“Aquaman” is the latest comic book film from DC Comics. Although the character appeared in the Justice League movie this is his origin story plus very compelling action filled plot. I saw it in 3D and I felt it was the greatest 3D film I’ve seen since “Avatar”. Considering how much I loved Avatar that is high praise. Of particular note all of the underwater scenes in which people’s hair was flowing. This had to be a CGI special effect and it was so flawless even someone who takes a very critical eye towards special-effects found himself completely forgetting that I was watching CGI. The action was awesome. The plot was pretty good. Highly recommended.

“Capt. Marvel” is the latest from Marvel Studios. Again this is an origin story of what is a lesser-known superhero who is obviously going to play a major role in the next film “Avengers: Endgame”. It is Marvel Studios first standalone film with a female superhero. While I appreciate the significance for female fans, there wasn’t anything particularly feminine in my opinion. Carol Danvers is a fighter pilot who through a series of events gains superpowers, goes to an alien planet, loses her memory, regains it, and defeats the bad guys. Tom Cruise or any other male action hero could’ve easily played the part. As recounted in this article https://nerdist.com/article/9-captain-marvel-comics-history-shazam/
there have been nine different characters over three different comic companies to use the name Capt. Marvel and they did not have a female version until 2012. So this is hardly a direct comparison to a character like Wonder Woman on the DC Comics side of things. I saw this one in 3D as well and enjoyed it a lot. There were good 3D effects although it wasn’t quite as spectacular as “Aquaman”. Given my status as an old white guy I can’t really say what kind of role model she makes for young girls. All I can say is I like the movie. I look forward to seeing the character in the next Avenger film. One other great plus for the movie is gives us a deeper look at the early days of Nick Fury as portrayed by Samuel L Jackson. In some ways it’s as much his origin story as it is hers. We also get brief glimpses a young Agent Colson portrayed by Clark Kellogg was a little help from a CGI facelift. If there were CGI effects to make Jackson look younger, they were so good you didn’t notice like you did for Colson. Highly commended.

    • Hulu is going to adapt George RR Martin’s anthology series “Wild Cards” into multiple TV series.

Someone on Reddit suggested that a film about a dystopian society where the government granting freedoms based on attendance to propaganda films. The plot sounds like a ripoff of the old “Space 1999”. Entertainment news: Hardwick commentary; Andrew Lloyd Webber no longer Really Useful; Picard makes it so again; Data is new VP; RIP Ellison, Ditko and others.

I’m still trying to get caught up on entertainment news.

Before we start I want to comment on the Chris Hardwick situation. In case you don’t know Chris Hardwick is the host of the “Talking Dead” after show for both “The Walking Dead” and “Fear the Walking Dead” on AMC. In the walking that off-season he also has his own show on AMC called “Talking with Chris Hardwick” in which he interviews a celebrity guest for a full hour. He is also occasionally hosted and after show for “Better Call Saul” titled “Talking Saul”. He also hosts the NBC primetime game show “The Wall”. He was the founder of the nerd culture website Nerdest.com in which he had a podcast for many years where he interviewed celebrities one-on-one.

Several weeks ago on the day of the season premiere of “Talking with Chris Hardwick” AMC pulled him off the air and canceled his appearances at San Diego Comic Con where he was set to host panel discussions with the stars of the Walking Dead franchise.

It was prompted by a blog post by his ex-girlfriend who, without naming him specifically, described an ex-boyfriend who is emotionally and physically abusive to her. She claimed that after their breakup he threatened and/or actually did try to ruin her career by blacklisting her and discouraging other people from hiring her. Given the hypersensitivity and zero-tolerance state of the #MeToo era we are living in he was guilty until proven innocent. I mentioned that she did not identify him by name but she described the ex-boyfriend as a media icon who started out with a famous online podcast and is now a comedian and talkshow host. And it was public knowledge that they had been a couple so it was obviously him.

Hardwick released a statement saying that it was a nasty breakup but denied any abuse allegations. AMC eventually said that Yvette Nicole Brown who is a frequent celebrity fan guest on the “Talking Dead” show would replace him at comic con and on the TV shows on an interim basis. She made it clear in tweets that she considered it “just filling in for a friend”. When it was announced that Hardwick was suspended I publicly speculated that Brown would be the only logical choice for a replacement. NBC commented that new episodes of “The Wall” would not start taping until September and they were taking a wait and see attitude.

Many genre TV shows have attempted to produce after-shows similar to “Talking Dead” including “Orphan Black”, “Game of Thrones”, and “Sons of Anarchy” but none have been successful because they’ve not been near the quality of those hosted by Hardwick. He is a credible super fan, he has a sensitive yet probing style of interview, his experience doing nerd-based stand-up comedy shines through in his approach to the interviews. There is lots of fan involvement with questions submitted via social media and a weekly question from a member of the studio audience. All of the above combines to make his shows a fun entertaining ride for fans of the series.

I was seriously bummed out that he was off the air because I’m a great fan of his. While there’s no excuse for the kind of abuse that women have suffered at the hands of media people and while I completely support the #MeToo movement, these cases need to be taken on a case-by-case basis. We live in a country founded on the principle of innocent until proven guilty. The current atmosphere makes it much too easy for a disgruntled person to completely destroy someone’s career over a mere accusation. Even if Hardwick is guilty of bad behavior, there are degrees of these things. There was no hint of multiple allegations and there were no details that suggested the kinds of extreme behavior alleged of people like Weinstein, Cosby, and Spacey. I really don’t believe everyone who’s experienced a bad relationship deserves to have their career destroyed.

Fortunately after an investigation by an outside firm, AMC has agreed to reinstate Hardwick as has NBC. Yvette Nicole Brown substituted for him at Comic Con. She also hosted a special edition of “Talking Dead” last week that was a preview of season nine of “The Walking Dead”. She announced that Hardwick would return next week to “Talking Dead” after the mid season premiere of “Fear The Walking Dead”. NBC also announced that he would return to “The Wall”. Last week he was also guest judge on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent”. I never saw any news references about that episode or what NBC might’ve done had he not been reinstated. There is no way they could edit him out of the episode especially since the guest judge always gets the opportunity to hit the Golden Buzzer to advance one act to the next round. I suppose had the investigation revealed that the situation was serious, they would’ve had to run the show with some sort of disclaimer saying that it was taped before the allegations were made public.

We’ve seen some extremely high profile actors such as Johnny Depp continue with their career beyond serious allegations about their abusive behavior. I wondered if they’ve gotten more of a free pass because it didn’t reach the level of the big three (Weinstein, Cosby, and Spacey) and they had sufficient economic incentives to turn a bit of a blind eye to the allegations. While Hardwick is a very hot property right now, he doesn’t have the star power Johnny Depp.

I’m relieved to see that someone who is not a megastar like Depp can continue with their career despite previous mistakes. Don’t get me wrong… People need to be held accountable for their bad behavior. But we have a court of law and due process procedures to deal with these kinds situations. My hope is that once the backlog of unreported abuse two things will happen. First women will be empowered to seek legal remedies to the things that have happened to them with more confidence that their claims will receive serious consideration. And second, I hope that anyone who does behave badly is treated like a case-by-case basis and that any consequences of their behavior is proportional to the offenses.

Soapbox mode off…

I’m trying to catch up with my entertainment news.  This blog entry covers June 1 through the present. We’ve been so far behind that I haven’t bothered to include any of my usual links to spoilers from TV journalists Michael Ausiello or Matt’s Inside Line. The “spoilers” that they referenced had already happened however I think we’re getting close enough there’s some useful information in those links so we will start including them as I come across them.

We begin with 2 major deaths.

RIP famous sci-fi author Harlan Ellison who wrote the award-winning Star Trek episode “City on the Edge of Forever”, the film “A Boy and His Dog” and who edited and compiled the famous anthology series “Dangerous Visions”. Often quite outspoken and divisive among fans who either adored or hated him. He successfully sued several films for ripping off themes from his stories including Terminator which James Cameron admitted was an inspiration. He never wanted money in these lawsuits. He just insisted on being given credit for his ideas. He was 94.

AMC theater chain has started a $20 per month subscription program to compete with MoviePass. Unlike MoviePass, it is good for premium showings such as IMAX and 3D but of course is limited to AMC theaters. Meanwhile MoviePass crashed on the opening day of the new Mission Impossible film causing its stock to plummet. At first they said they will no longer support big blockbuster films such as this and that price would go up from $10 per month to $15 per month. Now they say they are keeping me $10 per month but limiting use to three movies per month.

RIP graphic designer Richard Alan Greenberg who designed the title sequences of Alien, Superman, the matrix and others. Age 71.

When I heard that the AMC series “The Terror” had been renewed for a second season I couldn’t understand because the story at basically wrapped up. However similar to American Horror Story the new season will have a completely different setting and topic. This time much of it takes place in a World War II Japanese internment camp. So basically it’s a totally different show.

Headline “Andrew Lloyd Webber’s theaters no longer really useful”. Really looking forward to seeing it and near Cinerama format and a decent sound system.

There’s going to be a prime time one hour special with never before seen segments to air on CBS August 20 at 8 PM. The original segment on his show was phenomenal. It included a surprise concert in a local Liverpool pub that was enough to bring tears to the eyes of any Beatles fan. Highly recommended and I’m looking forward to seeing what they do in the one hour special.

TNT will have a new sci-fi drama “Snowpiercer” based on the 2013 movie about survivors in a frozen post-apocalyptic world who ride around on a super train.

Recently the home used for exterior shots of “The Brady Bunch” went up for sale at auction. It was purchased by cable channel HGTV. The starting bids began at $1.9 million but the actual selling price has not been disclosed. They outbid former *NSYNC member Lance Bass who was hoping to acquire the home. HGTV plans to restore it to its former 1970s glory. On the original show the interiors were shot on a soundstage so the inside of the house probably resembles nothing like what we saw on TV.

The producers of “This Is Us” say that the new season will be more “hopeful” now that they’ve put the Jack’s death story behind them. However it will flash back to his days in Vietnam so how hopeful could that be? Time to stock up on tissue before the September 25 premiere.

Out of date Entertainment “News” from January through May

As I mentioned in my previous blog, we haven’t done one of these in over six months so much of it is not really “news”. We already covered my comments about what shows got renewed and canceled. So this is just miscellaneous news, tidbits, links of a different nature. Because I’m so far behind, this particular installment covers January through May. I will post another blog soon to get caught up from June through the present.

Here is a link to a chart showing the new fall schedule. We will probably do a separate blog to talk about some of the new shows before they air and we will endeavor to write reviews of most if not all of the new shows once they do air.

Cast members of Game of Thrones are speculating that multiple endings to the series are being shot because they don’t trust the actors to keep quiet. It’s more likely they just haven’t decided which ending playwright best.

Jordan Peele is going to reduce a new series for Amazon Studios titled “The Hunt” said in 1977 about a group of Nazi hunters living in New York City. 10 episodes have been ordered.

We previously reported are Agents of SHIELD had been renewed for season 6. We now know that it will be just 13 episodes and will not premiere until summer 2019. Executives insist this has nothing to do with the timing of the Marvel Cinematic Universe release of Avengers 4 in May. They also say that just because it’s a short season doesn’t mean it’s the end of the series. They seem to like they have a strong fan base and think that summer run will actually help keep the series going.

Pauley Perrette implied in a series of tweets that she left NCIS as a result of “multiple physical assaults” but she refuses to “spill the beans”. Nobody knows what that means.

ABC executives said that the cancellation of “Designated Survivor” was not only because of poor ratings but concerns on what creative direction the show would be going in the future. They had three different show runners into seasons so the show underwent a lot of turmoil behind the scenes.

Epix cable network has ordered a 10 episode series titled “Pennyworth” about Alfred Pennyworth famous butler to Bruce Wayne. It will explore his origins as a former SAS soldier who opened a security business with Bruce Wayne’s father Thomas Wayne in 1960s London. Although produced by Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller, it is not set in the same “universe” as Gotham and will not have Sean Pertwee who currently plays Alfred on Gotham. He is obviously too old to play the part.

RIP actress Patricia Morrison complained in the original Broadway production “Kiss Me Kate” opposite Yul Brynner. She was 103 years old.

Commentary on the List of Cancellations and Renewals of TV Shows

It’s been over six months since I did an entertainment news blog. I’ve done a number of reviews of various shows but no general news blog since the first of the year. My apologies to people who look forward to my collection of tidbits.

With the new fall season rapidly approaching I thought it was a good time to get caught up the best I can in preparation for of the new shows about to come. To get you ready for the new season here are some links you will want to check out from TVline.com

First of all a renewal scorecard for the broadcast networks showing what’s been renewed or canceled.

https://tvline.com/2017/10/10/renewed-tv-shows-2018-renewal-scorecard-cancelled-series/

We have a similar scorecard for cable shows.

https://tvline.com/2018/07/03/cable-tv-shows-renewed-cancelled-return-dates-scorecard/

And a new page… A scorecard for streaming network shows.

https://tvline.com/2018/07/02/streaming-tv-shows-renewed-cancelled-netflix-hulu-amazon-scorecard/

Here is a calendar of the premier dates for all of the new and returning TV shows. I will be using it and other sources to post daily messages on Facebook when shows premier.

https://tvline.com/2018/07/24/fall-tv-premiere-dates-2018-schedule-calendar-printable/

Before doing my usual tidbits I’m going to do just this blog where I go through the above lists of renewed and canceled shows and comment on the ones that are of interest to me. Use the links to see the full list. These are just the ones I care about or cared to comment about. In the next day or two I will try to go through all of my websites and online sources to do one of my usual blogs but most of it’s going to be way out of date and I missed a lot of news along the way. I think my RSS feeds are only good for about two or three months so we missed a lot.

ABC

American Idol: Returning for the second season of its move to ABC. It didn’t quite have the same appeal as the original version but it was still pretty good. It felt like the season was kind of short. It also ate into the time for Dancing With The Stars which I did not like. DWTS had a short four episode season that wasn’t worth the effort.

The Crossing: this sci-fi series about people who are refugees from a future war who time back to the present day wasn’t the greatest but it was good enough to keep my interest. I’m sorry it got canceled but I wasn’t too surprised.

Deception: I thought this show had a lot of potential. It was about a famous illusionist and his twin brother who were working with the FBI to catch criminals by pulling off stunts to trap them into giving themselves up. I thought the main characters had a lot of chemistry. It sort of reminded me of Castle. Unfortunately a got canceled after just one season.

Designated Survivor: Kiefer Sutherland got to be president after a terrorist attack wiped out the entire government. He survived assassination attempts and other terrorist attacks but cannot survive low ratings. It’s gone after just 2 seasons. It was watchable but I’m not really going to miss it.

The Good Doctor: Renewed. I still don’t really buy the premise of this series that someone with that severe case of autism could survive as a surgical resident. No matter how sympathetic I am to equal opportunity for people with disabilities I just don’t buy the premise. But I really like the show because it’s just a good basic medical drama with compelling stories and interesting characters even if I don’t particularly like the main character. Overall I’m glad to see its back and I know lots of people really like it.

For the People: Renewed. I’m so far behind watching TV that I haven’t even started this series but it looks pretty good. I’m hoping I can get caught up before the second season starts.

How to Get Away with Murder: This is a show I love to hate. Their time jumping storytelling technique makes it so confusing to watch sometimes that by the time the big secrets get revealed we don’t care anymore. But the acting is excellent and despite the confusing structure the writing is pretty good as well. I continue to watch it but I keep hoping it will get better. It will be back.

Kevin Probably Saves the World: But he couldn’t save his own show. It was kind of cute with a lot of heart but I won’t miss it that much.

Agents of SHIELD: I continue to be surprised that that show gets renewed each year. I really like it and I enjoy the way it ties into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It looks like one of those shows that a niche group of fans would enjoy but would not have popular appeal and would get canceled. But for some reason it keeps hanging in there. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do next year.

Marvel’s Inhumans: I really was disappointed by this show. Considering how much I am a fan of Marvel shows I expected to like but it just didn’t work for me. I will not be missing it now that it is gone.

Once Upon A Time: the series went through a bit of a reboot this past season and I never did get into very well. It pretty much has run its course and so although I really enjoyed it, I think they had run out of ideas and it was a good time to cancel it. I will have fond memories but it was time to quit.

Quantico: This was another show that I wanted to like more than I did. Sometimes it was good but most of the time it just dragged. I’ve not even started on this season and I may not bother with it. I will not miss it now that it is canceled.

Roseanne: I enjoyed the reboot and was sorry that Roseanne herself went and ruined things. Fortunately it’s being replaced by a spinoff series called “The Connors” which will feature most of the same characters without Roseanne herself. I even wrote on Facebook that would be a good idea. Not that they took my advice but that’s what we are getting and I’m looking forward to it.

Scandal: I really, really enjoyed this show. On the other hand it had pretty much run its course and it was time to quit. I was a little bit disappointed in some of the final plot turns. Too many of the bad guys got off easy. I will really miss it however even though they had about run out of ideas.

Speechless: Show about a family with the disabled teenager continues to hit the spot perfectly. Although it gets a little bit silly at times I still enjoy it and I’m glad to see it coming back.

Station 19: This spinoff from Grey’s Anatomy about firefighter/paramedics looks promising. I’ve not yet started on this season but definitely intend to binge it soon. It’s been renewed.

CBS

9JKL: This new sitcom should have been a lot better than it was given its cast but I only watched a couple of episodes and was not surprised it was canceled.

The Amazing Race: Glad to see it’s back again.

The Big Bang Theory: Continues to be my favorite sitcom. Glad to see it’s still going strong.

Blue Bloods: one of my favorites will return.

Bull: It’s not really great but it’s good enough to watch and I’m glad it’s coming back.

Code Black: I watched a few episodes of the first season and it just didn’t work for me. I know people who really liked it and will miss it now that it’s gone.

Criminal Minds: used to be a favorite of mine but it got so dark and depressing. I just couldn’t deal with a new and more terrifying psychopath week after week. I gave up on it two seasons ago but it’s still going strong and will be back.

Elementary: Pleased to see it will be back.

Hawaii 50: glad to see its back.

Instinct: Really enjoyed this new series and I’m happy it’s coming back.

Kevin Can Wait: I only got through a couple of episodes the first season. Killing off his wife for the second season didn’t help that show or so I’ve heard. It’s gone.

Living Biblically: I really liked this show. The premise was fraught with difficulties but I thought they pulled it off pretty well. Not surprised that it did not get renewed however. It was fun for one season.

MacGyver: I only watched a couple of episodes the first season and it just didn’t have the appeal of the original but apparently some people like it so it’s coming back.

Madam Secretary: One of my favorites and I’m glad it’s back.

Me, Myself & I: I really liked that show. Thought it was cute, smart, and had a lot of heart. I’m going to miss it.

Mom: One of my favorites will be back.

NCIS: another favorite back for season 16.

NCIS: New Orleans: another favorite back again.

NCIS: LA: can’t explain why I never liked it considering how much I like the other two. It’s back again but I won’t be watching.

Scorpion: A totally ridiculous and unbelievable show that was a guilty pleasure. It jumped the shark at least a season ago. I’d had enough and won’t miss it. I hope that Katharine McPhee finds another show that makes better use of her talent.

SEAL Team: Of the three new military dramas that premiered this year, this is the only one that survived and I think it’s a good one. I’m looking forward to next season.

Young Sheldon: I expected to like this a lot better. At first I was very disappointed. I stuck with it and it eventually grew on me. It’s coming back and I hope I continue to like it.

Zoo: a kind of guilty pleasure that I enjoyed but not surprised it got canceled. Still have a half of season to catch up on. I will catch it on Netflix.

Fox

911: Really enjoyed the first season. Looking forward to the next one.

Brooklyn Nine- Nine: Never did acquire a taste for this. It was canceled by Fox but will be renewed by NBC.

Empire: I liked the first season but didn’t stick with it after that. It’s coming back along with the similar series “Star” which will be returning. I never watched it but they are both pretty popular.

The Four: This reality singing show isn’t as good as American Idol or The Voice but I kind of like it. You can skip through the boring parts and just watch the performances themselves. You can get through a 2 hour episode in one hour so I watch it.

Gotham: Despite terrible ratings they are it bringing back for a final season in which we will finally get to see Bruce Wayne officially become Batman. I will miss it when it’s gone. I’m glad they are at least going to wrap up the story with a final season.

LA to Vegas: Probably the worst new show of the season. Not surprised it got canceled.

The Last Man on Earth: This totally ridiculous but very funny guilty pleasure will not be coming back. It had probably run its course a season ago but I will still miss it.

Lethal Weapon: When Riggs was shot in the chest in the final episode it looked like a fatal heart shot but I figured they would come up with a way to save him. As it turns out he’s really dead. Apparently the actor who portrayed him was such a pain to work with that they fired him. He’s being replaced for next season by a character who will probably be his brother.

Lucifer: TV line listed this show as “A Safe Bet” for renewal and then changed it to “Could go either way” and then finally “Officially Canceled”. I was very disappointed because I really like it. Fortunately it has been picked up by Netflix so I’m very happy it will continue.

New Girl: very popular RomCom that I watched for the first half of the first season but it really didn’t do that much for me. It will not be returning.

The Orville: Extremely glad to see it coming back. Will have to wait for the midseason however.

Prison Break: TV line list it as “could go either way”. I would like to see another season but I would imagine it’s really a long shot.

The X-Files: Listed as “a long shot” I don’t know why but I never watched the original. When it rebooted last year it was just okay but I wished it was better. I’ve liked the current season better. I won’t miss it if it’s gone but I probably will watch if it comes back.

NBC

AP Bio: Absolutely terrible sitcom I could barely make through one episode. Somebody must like it because it got renewed.

Better Late Than Never: A guilty pleasure reality show featuring William Shatner, Henry Winkler, George Foreman traveling through Europe and Asia. Not surprised it won’t come back but it was fun while it lasted.

The Blacklist: Another favorite returning.

The Brave: I watched it but it wasn’t as good as SEAL Team and it will not be coming back.

Champions: An awful sitcom that deserves to be canceled and was.

Chicago Fire, Med, and PD: I never got into any of these just because I already watched too much TV. I know they are popular and all three are coming back.

Good Girls: This show about housewives who become criminals looks like it has some potential even though I only saw a couple of episodes. It will be back

The Good Place: another silly guilty pleasure will be returning.

Law & Order:SVU: don’t watch it much but it will be back again.

Rise: Watched a few of them and it had potential but it won’t be back.

Shades of Blue: The first season was pretty good, second season just so so. Did not watch the third final season. Will not miss it.

Taken: I watched it but won’t miss it now that it’s gone.

This Is Us: lives up to all the hype. Must-see TV. Of course it’s coming back.

Timeless: was canceled last year but got a last-minute reprieve. I don’t expect it to get a reprieve again. It ran out of time.

The Wall: This primetime game show is coming back but no word on whether or not troubled host Chris Hardwick will return after abuse allegations from ex-girlfriend. Did not watch it but I will be seriously disappointed if Hardwick does not return to “Talking Dead”. Yvette Nicole Brown is a “temporary” replacement on Talking Dead which is a great choice but we will see what happens long-term.

Will & Grace: really enjoyed the return. Renewed for 2 more seasons already.

World of Dance: pretty good show. Coming back for season 3.

The CW network:

The 100: I’ve not yet started on the most recent season which started late this year. I’ve enjoyed the previous ones and glad to see it is returning.

Arrow, Black Lightning, Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Supernatural: All of my heroes are returning and I am well pleased.

iZombie: I like this cute quirky zombie show but have not been able to keep up with it. Renewed for one more season.

Valor: The worst of the three new military dramas that premiered the season is not coming back. I barely got through one episode.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: I really like this show because it has very funny musical production numbers but I just haven’t had time to keep up with it. It has been renewed for a final season.

Finally caught up… Leonard returns to Roseann; Cooper and Legend do Superstar; More Robot, Punisher, and Van Helsing; Star Wars is grossest

We finally get caught up on entertainment news with these items from December 2016. By the way I made the conscious decision not to try to track all of the various media people who have been taken down by allegations of sexual impropriety. It’s not that I don’t care about the issue. I very much do so. But the deluge of reports has been so widespread in the media that I’ve not bothered to repeat much if any of it here. I’ve only mentioned some of the fallout such as the retooling of the final season of House of Cards and to highlight a couple of lesser-known media people such as the executive producer of Supergirl/Arrow etc. and a DC comics editor. Today we add to the list journalist John Hockenberry who is probably the only person who served as a war correspondent in Afghanistan while being confined to a wheelchair by spinal board injury. He was a bit of a hero of mine. Met him once at a disability conference and very much enjoyed his autobiography Moving Violations. He has acknowledged some of his inappropriate behavior and apologized so give him some credit for that. One other interesting recent revelation. Lord of the Rings Director Peter Jackson confirms that Harvey Weinstein ordered him not to cast Ashley Judd or Mira Sorvino in the Rings Trilogy.
